Spectra Logic Rolls Out World’s Largest Capacity Tape Library

Today Spectra Logic announced the Spectra TFinity ExaScale Edition, the world’s largest and most richly-featured tape storage system. “Since 2008, Spectra Logic has worked with engineers in the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Division at NASA’s Ames Research Center, in California’s Silicon Valley, first deploying a Spectra tape library with 22 petabytes of capacity. According to NASA, the Spectra tape library’s capacity has grown to approximately one half an Exabyte of archival storage today. After extensive testing over the past year, NASA recently deployed a Spectra TFinity ExaScale Edition in their 24×7 production HPC environment.”

FujiFilm Qualifies Next-Gen LTO-7 Cartridge

Last week at SC15, Fujifilm announced that its next-generation LTO Ultrium 7 data cartridge has been qualified by the LTO technology provider companies for commercial production and is available immediately. FUJIFILM LTO Ultrium 7 has a compressed storage capacity of 15.0TB with a transfer rate of 750MB/sec assuming 2.5:1 compression ratio. This capacity achievement represents a 2.4X increase over the current LTO-6 generation.

Spectra Logic to Offer LTO-7 Technology

Today Spectra Logic announced it is now taking orders for Spectra tape libraries configured with Linear Tape-Open Generation 7 (LTO-7) technology. The combination of LTO-7, the industry-standard for tape technology, and Spectra tape libraries will result in the best storage density available per dollar.

Spectra Logic Steps up with Deep Storage Technologies at SC14

“Recently, we released our BlackPearl appliance, which is an S3 gateway to tape. It’s a really easy way to get data into a deep storage archive. Kind of interesting to take this cloud-based technology, put it into appliance and actually build a private cloud for HPC.”

Henry Newman on Why Tape is Dead

In this video from the Nov. 17 Seagate User Group at SC14, Henry Newman from Instrumental presents: Tape vs. Disk 2015-2020. Transcript: So, I’m the last speaker between you and the opening gala event so I will talk quickly. Ken heard about a study we did for a government agency looking at long term archival issues […]

NCSA Adds 20PB to World’s Largest File Repository

Today Spectra Logic announced that NCSA has increased the capacity of the Spectra tape libraries that support the Blue Waters project, which is one of the world’s largest, most powerful supercomputers. The NCSA expanded its tape active archive capacity with the recent addition of 20 petabytes, and cited Spectra’s high performance, ease of use, affordability, scalability and excellent support received during the organizations’ two-year partnership.
