Video: Panel Discussion on Innovation in HPC

In this video from the HPC User Forum in Detroit, Earl Joseph from Hyperion Research moderates a panel discussion on Innovation in HPC. “Hyperion Research sponsors the annual HPC and ROI Innovation Awards to recognize noteworthy achievements made by users using High Performance Computing technologies. While there are multiple benchmarks to measure the performance of technical computers, there currently isn’t an adequate methodology to evaluate the economic and scientific value HPC systems contribute. The HPC Innovation Excellence Award Program is designed to help close that gap.”

Radio Free HPC Talks to Brent Gorda on the Future of ARM HPC

In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team catches up with Brent Gorda to discuss the future of ARM in HPC. “Brent Gorda leads the HPC business for Arm. Prior to this recent role, he spent a year consulting (HPC/Quantum/AI) and advising startup CEO’s in Silicon Valley. Earlier in his career, he founded Whamcloud, which he sold to Intel and served as the General Manager for Intel’s High Performance Data Division. Brent has also served on many advisory boards (SCxy, Cray Research, Westera) and founded the Student Cluster Competition.”

Survey Foretells Explosive Growth in Machine Learning Projects Over Next Two Years

Over at the Univa Blog, Gary Tyreman writes that the company sponsored an industry-wide survey to better understand what key challenges our HPC users are currently facing that are preventing them from moving their machine learning (ML) projects into production. “Our goal is to use this data to help guide our customers and recommend the right set of tools and migration options needed to accelerate value in machine learning.”

What would you do with a Million cores?

Ian Colle from AWS gave this talk at the Univa Breakfast Briefing at ISC 2018. “To demonstrate the unique ability to run very large enterprise HPC clusters and workloads, Univa leveraged AWS to deploy 1,015,022 cores in a single Univa Grid Engine cluster to showcase the advantages of running large-scale electronic design automation (EDA) workloads in the cloud. The cluster was built in approximately 2.5 hours using Navops Launch automation and comprised more than 55,000 AWS instances in 3 availability zones, 16 different instance types and leveraged AWS Spot Fleet technology to maximize the rate at which Amazon EC2 hosts were launched while enabling capacity and costs to be managed according to policy.”
