GPUs for Oil and Gas Firms: Deriving Insights from Petabytes of Data

Adoption of GPU-accelerated computing can offer oil and gas firms significant ROI today and pave the way to gain additional advantage from future technical developments. To stay competitive, these companies need to be able to derive insights from petabytes of sensor, geolocation, weather, drilling, and seismic data in milliseconds. A new white paper from Penguin Computing explores how GPUs are spurring innovation and changing how hydrocarbon businesses address data processing needs.

Podcast: Intel to power Anthos Google Cloud Platform

In this Chip Chat podcast, Paul Nash from the Google Cloud Platform discusses the industry trends impacting IaaS and how Google Cloud Platform together with Intel are driving innovation in the cloud. “The two companies will collaborate on Anthos, a new reference design based on the 2nd-Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor and an optimized Kubernetes software stack that will deliver increased workload portability to customers who want to take advantage of hybrid cloud environments. Intel will publish the production design as an Intel Select Solution, as well as a developer platform.”

The Infinite Memory Engine – Unlocking the Potential of NVMe

In this video from DDN booth at SC18, John Bent from DDN presents: IME – Unlocking the Potential of NVMe. “DDN’s Infinite Memory Engine (IME) is a scale-out, software-defined, flash storage platform that streamlines the data path for application I/O. IME interfaces directly to applications and secures I/O via a data path that eliminates file system bottlenecks. With IME, architects can realize true flash-cache economics with a storage architecture that separates capacity from performance.”

Video: Suitability of Commercial Clouds for NASA’s HPC Applications

Bob Hood from InuTeq gave this talk at the HPC User Forum. “NASA’s High-End Computing Capability Project is periodically asked if it could be more cost effective through the use of commercial cloud resources. To answer the question, HECC’s Application Performance and Productivity team undertook a performance and cost evaluation comparing three domains: two commercial cloud providers, Amazon and Penguin, and HECC’s in-house resources—the Pleiades and Electra systems.”

How Dell EMC Powers HPC for the Oil & Gas industry

In this video from the Dell EMC HPC Community Meeting, Robert Dildy from Dell EMC describes how the company powers HPC for the Oil & Gas industry. “The Dell EMC HPC Community is a worldwide technical forum that fosters the exchange of ideas among researchers, computer scientists, technologists, and engineers and promotes the advancement of innovative, powerful HPC solutions.”

Edge Computing Proves Critical for Drilling Rigs, Pipeline Integrity

This is the third entry in a five-part insideHPC series that takes an in-depth look at how machine learning, deep learning and AI are being used in the energy industry. Read on to learn how edge computing is playing a role in operating drilling rigs, ensuring pipeline integrity and more.

The Use of HPC to Model the California Wildfires

Ilkay Altintas from the San Diego Supercomputer Center gave this talk at the HPC User Forum. “WIFIRE is an integrated system for wildfire analysis, with specific regard to changing urban dynamics and climate. The system integrates networked observations such as heterogeneous satellite data and real-time remote sensor data, with computational techniques in signal processing, visualization, modeling, and data assimilation to provide a scalable method to monitor such phenomena as weather patterns that can help predict a wildfire’s rate of spread.”

NVIDIA Makes Visualization Easier in the Cloud

Visualizing the results of a simulation can give new insight into complex scientific problems. Interactive viewing of entire datasets can lead to earlier understanding of the challenge at hand and can enhance the understanding of complex phenomena. With the release of the of HPC Visualization Containers with the NVIDIA CPU Cloud, it has become much easier to get a visualization system up and production ready much quicker than ever before.

Intel Select Solutions: Enabling HPC for a Broader Set of Users

Building upon the success of Intel Cluster Ready and Intel Scalable System Framework (Intel SSF), Intel is facilitating the deployment of computing resources to non-traditional HPC users with the recently announced Intel Select Solutions for HPC. The following guest article from Intel explores how Intel Select Solutions is working to enable and simplify HPC for a broader set of users.

Consumer GPUs Power 2 Petaflop Deep Learning Cluster at ASTRON

Today ClusterVision announced the successful deployment of a new high performance computing GPU cluster system for the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (ASTRON). “By utilizing the deep learning capabilities of the GPU cluster, the telescopes will be able to detect pulsar flashes with much greater accuracy through self-learning. In the past, ASTRON scientists had to manually detect and input pulsar patterns. With deep learning, ARTS does it for them.”
