Video: Are women underrepresented in the HPC community?

Athina Frantzana from the University of Edinburgh gave this talk at the EuroPython Conference. “This study is the first attempt to understand the current gender demographics of the HPC community, and identify potential reasons and ways to tackle the gender imbalance. By listening to the people who constitute the community, the study offers a guideline on what the HPC community should focus on in order to become more attractive, accessible and useful to everyone.”

Data Vortex hosts Texas Women in HPC Summer Mixer

Last week, Data Vortex Technologies hosted the Texas Women in HPC (TXWHPC) PechaKucha Summer Mixer at their Austin headquarters. A wide selection of topics was presented, ranging from quantum entanglement to the analysis of novels with software. “It’s very exciting to see a younger generation of women reaching out and engaging their peers in the field,” says Data Vortex CEO and TXWHPC Co-Chair Carolyn Devany. “Our industry is one that drives forward so much of human development – it is pivotal that inclusive representation is made a priority.”

Rice Oil & Gas Conference in March to look for ways to meet HPC Demand

Rice University’s Ken Kennedy Institute will host the 12th annual Rice Oil and Gas High Performance Computing Conference (OGHPC) in Houston, Texas on March 4 – 6, 2019. “With the end of Moore’s law, challenges are mounting around a rapidly changing technology landscape,” said Jan E. Odegard, Executive Director of the Ken Kennedy Institute. “The end of one era is an opportunity for advancements and the beginning of a new era – a renaissance for system architectures that highlights the need for investments in workforce, algorithms, software, and hardware to support system scalability.”

Intel becomes First Corporate Champion for Women in HPC

Today the Women in High Performance Computing (WHPC) organization announced that Intel Corporation has become its first Corporate Champion. “Women represent less than 15% of the HPC sector; it is essential that we continue to work at the grassroots level and globally to grow the HPC talent pool and benefit from the diversity of talented women and other under-represented groups. With support from Intel, we can begin focusing on global programs and initiatives that can accelerate our goals and amplify our impact.”

PRACE Joins Women in HPC Affiliates Program

The European PRACE initiative has just become one of the first WHPC affiliates as part of Women in HPC’s ever-growing pilot expansion program. “We anticipate that the new WHPC affiliates will provide amplification of the WHPC mission to diversify the International HPC community, encourage the gathering of statistics of where women are in the community, what roles they fill and also helping us to identify why women leave and what we can do about it.”

Women in HPC Opens New Chapter in Texas

Faith Singer-Villalobos writes that Texas Women in HPC (TX-WHPC) has been recognized as one of the first Chapters in the new Women in High Performance Computing (WHPC) Pilot Program. “The WHPC Chapter Pilot will enable us to reach an ever increasing community of women, providing these women with the networks that we recognize are essential for them excelling in their career, and retaining them in the workforce,” says Sharon Broude Geva, WHPC’s Director of Chapters and Director of Advanced Research Computing at the University of Michigan. “At the same time, we envisage that the new Chapters will be able to tailor their activities to the needs of their local community, as we know that there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution to diversity.”

Women in HPC Workshop Returns to ISC 2018

The eighth international Women in HPC workshop will be held June 28 at ISC 2018 in Frankfurt. “This workshop provides leaders and managers in the HPC community with methods to improve diversity and also to provide early career women with an opportunity to develop their professional skills and profile. Following the overwhelming success of the 2017 WHPC workshops we will once again discuss methods and steps that can be taken to address the under-representation of women.”
