More than 1,600 members of the Apache Spark community from over 900 organizations have spoken, and Spark continues to be the most active open-source project in the big data space today. The 2016 Databricks Apache Spark Survey shows a rise in production deployments of Spark in the public cloud, as well as an increased usage of Spark for vertical industry-specific use cases.

Other key report findings include:

  • Spark adoption and community growth continues to accelerate, up from from 66,000 in 2015 to 225,000 members this year;
  • Spark’s Streaming and Machine Learning usage surge, in fact nearly 51 percent of respondents indicate Spark streaming as an essential component for building real-time streaming and analytical solutions;
  • Spark is attracting diverse users across big data analytics with adoption growing across professional roles due to its ease of use and accessibility of common programming languages.
