PINQ² and Hydro Québec Form Partnership Utilizing IBM Quantum

Montreal, March 25 th, 2024 — Hydro Québec is now a partner of the Platform for Digital and Quantum Innovation of Quebec (PINQ²). As the administrator of Canada’s first IBM Quantum System One located at IBM ’s facility in Bromont, Quebec, PINQ² offers an innovative approach to computing for companies wishing to conduct research , thus opening new possibilities in sectors such as healthcare, energy, manufacturing, the environment, and sustainable development, according to PINQ².

Through the use of quantum computing , Hydro Québec will explore new approaches to solving complex energy related issues, including demand forecasting as well as the design and operation of more sustainable energy systems With the state owned company already working on artificial intelligence algorithms that are capable of processing large volumes of information , quantum computing could open even greater opportunities Quantum computing could also contribute by supporting high performance computing work, to our current research in the materials simulation and discovery fields.

Having access to this technology is a considerable asset for companies , enabling them to benefit from the knowledge of an already established quantum ecosystem . Hydro Québec is proud to associate itself with an NPO that opens the door to research in various areas of innovation stated Christian Bélanger, Senior Director of Research and Innovation at Hydro Québec.

The energy transition will bring new challenges in the years to come, and quantum technologies such as those offered by PINQ² enable perspectives that we must explore Boldness and innovation are part of our DNA and we intend to explore the potential of these rapidly developing technologies Hydro Québec is also a founding partner of a leading global research group that focus es on quantum computing applications and it will collaborate with PINQ² in order to find solutions to the challenges that the sustainable development sector is facing.

“We are proud to work with a major Quebec partner such as Hydro Québec and to explore the possibilities offered by the IBM Quantum System One,” stated Éric Capelle, Executive Director of PINQ². “By working together, we hope to meet the challenges of sustainable development as well as accelerate energy innovation through quantum computing.”
