As heterogeneous node architectures are becoming more prevalent for mainstream computing systems, the requirement for simple and platform portable programming methods manifests in a number of different programming strategies. Application developers that want to migrate existing to or develop new applications for these novel platforms, are looking for best-practice approaches that offer a reasonable results in a short period of development time. As a result domain specific languages as well as directive based programming methods are welcome strategies when targeting heterogeneous system architectures, since they can abstract the underlying hardware specific details of low-level programming approaches and have shown to offer very good productivity. The holy grail for all such strategies is to achieve not only a platform portability but also offer an application performance the is comparable to the low-level programming models on multiple platforms without code changes. The proposed workshop will solicit papers and presentations both on the methodology of these approaches as well as best-practice experiences from early adopters. Learn more.

The rapid growth and accessibility of new and increasingly powerful high-performance computing (HPC) technologies and hardware can enable the use of high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes based on first-principles, such as the Navier-Stokes equations, for substantially improving renewable energy power plant analysis and design, thus greatly improving power generation effectiveness while minimizing potential environmental damage. In offshore renewable energy, this requires reliably modeling the flow past wind and tidal turbines, as well as the complex physics of atmospheric flows and marine currents. The use of high-fidelity CFD for these applications relies on the massive and efficient use of HPC due to the large size of these real-world simulations. Augmenting state-of-art CFD codes with the latest HPC technologies to enable their effective use for these problems, while maintaining user-friendliness and achieving an optimal computational performance, poses significant scientific and technological challenges; addressing these challenges requires tight team-work of Engineers, Physicists of the Environment, and Scientific Computing experts. Leading FPGA manufacturers have recently made a concerted effort to provide a range of higher-level, easier to use, design entries for programming FPGAs, including the OpenCL framework, already widely used by the HPC community for heterogeneous computing. OpenCL is particularly appealing because it offers the potential for portability to GPUs and Xeon Phi. Such initiatives are already stimulating new interest within the HPC community around the potential advantages of FPGAs over other architectures in terms of both performance and energy consumption, with increasing relevance to the challenges faced on the road to Exascale. With this in mind, this will be a unique workshop at SC that brings together HPC and heterogeneous-computing researchers to demonstrate and share experiences on how newly-available high-level programming models, including OpenCL, are already empowering HPC software developers to directly leverage FPGAs, and to identify future opportunities and needs for research in this area. One of the hard realities is that the hardware continues to evolve very rapidly with diverse memory subsystems or cores with different ISAs or accelerators of varied types. The HPC community is in constant need for sophisticated software tools and techniques to port legacy code to these emerging platforms. Maintaining a single code base yet achieving performance portable solution continues to pose a daunting task. Directive-based programming models such as OpenACC, OpenMP tackle this issue by offering scientists a high-level approach to accelerate scientific applications and develop performance portable solutions. This enables accelerators to be first-class citizens for HPC! To address the rapid pace of hardware evolution, developers continue to explore and add richer features to the various (parallel) programming standards. Domain scientists continue to explore the programming and tools space while preparing themselves for future Exascale systems.
Held in conjunction with SC16, this workshop aims to solicit papers that explore innovative language features – their implementations, compilation & runtime scheduling techniques, performance optimization strategies, autotuning tools exploring the optimization space and so on. WACCPD has been one of the major forums for bringing together the users, developers and tools community to share their knowledge and experiences of using directives and similar approaches to program emerging complex systems.
