The scale of today’s leading HPC systems, which operate at the petascale, has put a strain on many simulation codes – both scientific and commercial. Only a small number of applications worldwide have, to date, demonstrated performance at the petaflop/s level. Many of the scientific challenges behind these codes are driving the need for the next generation of exascale HPC systems. Example scientific challenges originate from energy, climate, nanotechnology and medicine and are widely accepted to be of global significance. For simulation codes that are already struggling to scale up to petaflop levels, major investment is required to enable these codes to run at the exascale. Application optimisation and algorithmic modifications only represent part of this challenge. Systems of the scale envisaged present enormous challenges in terms of reliability, programmability, power consumption and usability. Programming models, libraries, languages, compilers and tools all need adaption and improvement. Applications must interact with many of these software aspects to be able to exploit exascale systems efficiently. The aim of this conference is to bring together all of the stakeholders involved in solving the software challenges of the exascale – from application developers, through numerical library experts, programming model developers and integrators, to tools designers. Distributed & Heterogeneous Programming in C/C++ (DHPCC++18)

In response to the demand for heterogeneous programming models for C/C++, and the interest in driving these models in ISO C++, Distributed & Heterogeneous Programming in C/C++ includes all the programming models that have been designed to support heterogeneous programming in C and C++.

Many models now exist including SYCL, HPX, KoKKos, Raja, C++AMP, HCC, Boost.Compute, and CUDA to name a few. This conference aims to address the needs of both HPC and the consumer/embedded community where a number of C++ parallel programming frameworks have been developed to address the needs of multi-threaded and distributed applications. The C++11/14/17 International Standards have introduced new tools for parallel programming to the language, and the ongoing standardization effort is developing additional features which will enable support for heterogeneous and distributed parallelism into ISO C++ 20/23. This conference is an ideal place to discuss research in this domain, consolidate usage experience, and share new directions to support new hardware and memory models with the aim of passing that experience to ISO C and C++.

ETP4HPC is organizing a workshop at ISC 2018 to prepare the post Horizon 2020 HPC vision and technology roadmap. The event takes place Sunday, June 24 in Frankfurt, Germany.

What will be next? What will be the role of High-Performance Computing and related technologies in the post Horizon 2020 era? What should be the main priorities of the EC Framework Programme 9 in that area? What will be the key assumptions for the next Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) of ETP4HPC, for the HiPEAC vision and other similar documents in the area of HPC, Big Data and AI?

This workshop is the first in a series of events that aim to define a shared vision for the European HPC technology roadmap for the period of 2021-26. This vision should form the basis of the European HPC Research and Innovation Work Pro- grammes following Horizon 2020 (e.g. FP9). We expect our Vision document to be available in the first quarter of 2019. Our partners in the European Big Data and Ar- tificial Intelligence (AI) communities are working on similar documents and we will collaborate with them in order to reach a shared view. Learn more.

The ExaComm 2018 International Workshop on Communication Architectures for HPC, Big Data, Deep Learning and Clouds at Extreme Scale is returning to Frankfurt for ISC 2018. Extreme Scale computing in HPC, Big Data, Deep Learning and Clouds are marked by multiple-levels of hierarchy and heterogeneity ranging from the compute units (many-core CPUs, GPUs, APUs etc) to storage devices (NVMe, NVMe over Fabrics etc) to the network interconnects (InfiniBand, High-Speed Ethernet, Omni-Path etc). Owing to the plethora of heterogeneous communication paths with different cost models expected to be present in extreme scale systems, data movement is seen as the soul of different challenges for exascale computing. On the other hand, advances in networking technologies such as NoCs (like NVLink), RDMA enabled networks and the likes are constantly pushing the envelope of research in the field of novel communication and computing architectures for extreme scale computing. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and software/hardware designers from academia, industry and national laboratories who are involved in creating network-based computing solutions for extreme scale architectures. The objectives of this workshop will be to share the experiences of the members of this community and to learn the opportunities and challenges in the design trends for exascale communication architectures. Multiscale phenomena are ubiquitous and are the key to understanding the complexity of our world. In computational research, tackling problems in a multiscale way reveals a deeper understanding of a system under investigation and higher-fidelity output. With the advent of exascale supercomputing power, multiscale simulations hold unprecedented power for researchers. The key to unlocking this power is being able to wield it.

In this 3-hour session, with our guidance, you will use one of our applications and couple it in a multiscale manner on your laptop locally. Following that, you will run that multiscale application on a supercomputer using ComPat tools and services. We will describe the principles, concepts, tools, and codes along the way. By the end of the session, you will be able to run a multiscale application on HPC. Then, over the lunch we provide, you can chat with our experts about how you can apply what you’ve learned to make your own application a multiscale and HPC application. Learn more.

ORNL is hosting a series of GPU Hackathons in 2018. The goal of each Hackathon is for current or prospective user groups of large hybrid CPU-GPU systems to send teams of at least 3 developers along with either (1) a (potentially) scalable application that could benefit from GPU accelerators, or (2) an application running on accelerators that need optimization. There will be intensive mentoring during this 5-day hands-on workshop, with the goal that the teams leave with applications running on GPUs, or at least with a clear roadmap of how to get there.  Our mentors come from national laboratories, universities, and vendors, and besides having extensive experience in programming GPUs, many of them develop the GPU-capable compilers and help define standards such as OpenACC and OpenMP. Additional events are planned for Australia, Boulder, CO, Brookhaven Lab, Switzerland and ORNL. Learn more.

The IEEE Cluster 2018 conference has issued it Call for Papers. The event takes place September 10-14, 2018 in Belfast UK.

Following the successes of previous IEEE Cluster conferences, for IEEE Cluster 2018, which will be held September 10-14, 2018 in Belfast UK, we again solicit high-quality original work that advances the state-of-the-art in clusters and closely related fields. All papers will be rigorously peer-reviewed for their originality, technical depth and correctness, potential impact, relevance to the conference, and quality of presentation. Research papers must clearly demonstrate novel research contributions while papers reporting experiences must clearly describe lessons learned and impact, along with the utility of the approach compared to previous ones.

Clusters are the primary architecture for building today’s rapidly evolving cloud and HPC infrastructures, and are used to solve some of the most complex problems. The challenge to make them scalable, efficient, and more functional requires a community effort in the areas of cluster system design, management and monitoring, at the hardware, system, middleware and application levels. Current hardware trends lead to ever more complex compute node architectures offering multiple, heterogeneous levels of massive parallelism. As a result the ‘X’ in MPI +X demands more focus. A node in a future exascale system is expected to consist of GPU-like accelerators combined with processor architectures of other types. In order to exploit the maximum available parallelism out of such systems, we are in dire need of sophisticated programming approaches that can provide scalable as well as portable solutions without compromising on performance. The expectation from the scientific community is that such solutions should allow programmers to maintain a single code base whenever possible and to avoid requiring maintaining and debug multiple versions of the same code. The focus of this workshop is to explore this ‘X’ component in a hybrid MPI +X programming approach.
