Redefining the Developer Event: Get Your Hands Dirty!

The OpenPOWER Foundation wondered: What if developers at a developer event actually spent their time developing?

Announcing the OpenPOWER Developer Congress, a hands-on event where developers bring their laptops and best ideas and get their hands dirty, working under the tutelage of technical experts from all areas of the OpenPOWER community to create accelerated and optimized solutions that are simply not possible on other architectures.

The Congress will focus on the full stack of solution components — software, hardware, infrastructure, and tooling. Developers will have the opportunity to learn and develop solutions amongst their peers, amongst the leading experts in machine learning and AI, in a collaborative and supportive environment.

ISVs will be given the development, porting, and optimization information, the tools and techniques necessary to utilize multiple technologies, for example: PowerAI, TensorFlow, Chainer, Anaconda, GPU, FPGA, CAPI, POWER, and OpenBMC.

The first ever OpenPOWER Developer Congress will take place May 22-25 in San Francisco. Apply to attend, and learn new ways to embed specific solutions, accelerate workloads, or monetize applications, and leave with a solution your company can potentially sell.

The explosive growth of Big Data has caused many industrial firms to adopt High Performance Computing (HPC) technologies to meet the requirements of huge amount of data to be processed and stored. Modern HPC systems and the associated middleware (such as MPI and Parallel File systems) have been exploiting the advances in HPC technologies (multi/many-core architectures, accelerators, RDMA-enabled networking, NVRAMs and SSDs) during the last decade. However, Big Data middleware (such as Hadoop, HBase and Spark) have not embraced such technologies. These disparities are taking HPC and Big Data processing into ‘divergent trajectories’. International Workshop on High-Performance Big Data Computing (HPBDC), aims to bring HPC and Big Data processing into a ‘convergent trajectory’. The workshop provides a forum for scientists and engineers in academia and industry to present their latest research findings on major and emerging topics in this field. HPBDC 2017 will be held in conjunction with the 31st IEEE International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium (IPDPS 2017), Orlando, Florida USA, Monday, May 29th, 2017. Learn more.

The Second Workshop On Performance and Scalability of Storage Systems (WOPSSS) will be held jointly with ISC 2017 in Frankfurt, Germany.

The Workshop On Performance and Scalability of Storage Systems aims to present state-of-the-art research, innovative ideas, and experience that focus on the design and implementation of HPC storage systems in both academic and industrial worlds, with a special interest on their performance analysis. The arrival of new storage technologies and scales unseen in previous practice lead to significant loss of performance predictability. This will leave storage system designers, application developers and the storage community at large in the difficult situation of not being able to precisely detect bottlenecks, evaluate the room for improvement, or estimate the matching of applications with a given storage architecture. The ExaComm 2017 Workshop at ISC High Performance has posted its Full Agenda. As the Third International Workshop on Communication Architectures for HPC, Big Data, Deep Learning and Clouds at Extreme Scale, the one day workshop takes place at the Frankfurt Marriott Hotel on Thursday, June 22.

"Extreme Scale computing in HPC, Big Data, Deep Learning and Clouds are marked by multiple-levels of hierarchy and heterogeneity ranging from the compute units (many-core CPUs, GPUs, APUs etc) to storage devices (NVMe, NVMe over Fabrics etc) to the network interconnects (InfiniBand, High-Speed Ethernet, Omni-Path etc). Owing to the plethora of heterogeneous communication paths with different cost models expected to be present in extreme scale systems, data movement is seen as the soul of different challenges for exascale computing. On the other hand, advances in networking technologies such as NoCs (like NVLink), RDMA enabled networks and the likes are constantly pushing the envelope of research in the field of novel communication and computing architectures for extreme scale computing. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and software/hardware designers from academia, industry and national laboratories who are involved in creating network-based computing solutions for extreme scale architectures. The objectives of this workshop will be to share the experiences of the members of this community and to learn the opportunities and challenges in the design trends for exascale communication architectures." Benchmarking is an essential aspect of modern computational science, and as such, it provides a means for quantifying and comparing the performance of different computer systems. With a large combination of aspects to benchmark, all the way from the capability of a single core, to cluster configuration, and to various software configurations, the benchmarking process is more of an art than science. However, the results of this process, drive modern science and are vital for the community to draw sensible conclusions on the performance of applications and systems.

This special session focuses on research work aimed at benchmarking modern parallel and distributed systems for addressing a number of real world problems. As such, contributions concerning the definition of new open platforms, new benchmarks to match modern architectural evolutions, studies on the aspects of benchmarking different aspects of systems (from raw runtime performance to energy consumption to energy consumed per data movement) and mathematical foundations of benchmarking are sought. Computational scientists now have the opportunity to apply for the upcoming Argonne Training Program on Extreme-Scale Computing (ATPESC), scheduled for July 30 to August 11, 2017 near Chicago, IL.

With the challenges posed by the architecture and software environments of today’s most powerful supercomputers, and even greater complexity on the horizon from next-generation and exascale systems, there is a critical need for specialized, in-depth training for the computational scientists poised to facilitate breakthrough science and engineering using these amazing resources. This program provides intensive hands-on training on the key skills, approaches and tools to design, implement, and execute computational science and engineering applications on current supercomputers and the HPC systems of the future. As a bridge to that future, this two-week program fills many gaps that exist in the training computational scientists typically receive through formal education or shorter courses. The 2017 ATPESC program will be held at a new location from previous years, at the Q Center, one of the largest conference facilities in the Midwest, located just outside Chicago. Learn more.

The HPC community has been in constant and dire need for sophisticated software tools and techniques to port legacy code to emerging platforms. Given the complexity in hardware, maintaining a single code base yet achieving performance portable solution continues to pose a daunting task. Directive-based programming models such as OpenACC, OpenMP have been tackling this issue by offering scientists a high-level approach to accelerate scientific applications and develop solutions that are portable and yet do not compromise on performance or accuracy.

This workshop aims to solicit papers that explore innovative language features and their implementations, stories and lessons learnt while using directives to migrate scientific legacy code to parallel processors, state-of-the-art compilation and runtime scheduling techniques, performance optimization and analysis on state-of-the-art hardware and so on.
