Radio Free HPC Looks at Europe’s Push for Leadership in Global HPC

In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team looks at some the top High Performance Computing stories from this week. First up, we look at Europe’s effort to lead HPC in the next decade. After that, we look at why small companies like Scalable Informatics have such a hard time surviving in the HPC marketplace.

Scalable Informatics Closes Down their Shop

We are sad to report that HPC vendor Scalable Informatics has gone out of business. Headed up by CEO Joe Landman, Scalable Informatics spent the last 12 years building ‘Simply Faster” software-defined storage and compute solutions to the financial, research, scientific, and big data analysis markets. “There are days when this reporter wishes he wasn’t in the news business. Today is one of those days.”

Radio Free HPC Looks at the Top HPC Tech Stories from 2015

In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team looks at the Top Technology Stories for High Performance Computing in 2015. “From 3D XPoint memory to Co-Design Architecture and NVM Express, these new approaches are poised to have a significant impact on supercomputing in the near future.” We also take a look at the most-shared stories from 2015.

Better Healthcare with High performance Parallelized Genomics Analysis

Over at Scalability.org, Joe Landman writes that we are on the cusp of a healthcare revolution that will be sparked by high performance parallelized genomics analysis. Much of the awesomeness is in the algorithm, a massively parallel system that is described in depth here: “Churchill: an ultra-fast, deterministic, highly scalable and balanced parallelization strategy for the discovery of human genetic variation in clinical and population-scale genomics.”

“By working with ThinkParQ, we have been able to leverage one of the best and highest performance storage systems for scale-out deployment,” said Dr. Joseph Landman, CEO of Scalable Informatics. “When testing a write-dominated workload using fio, IOR, and io-bm,a single rack of FastPath Unison with BeeGFS running on spinning disks sustained in excess of 40GB/s for multi-terabyte sized writes, far outside of cache. This level of performance comes from the combination of FastPath Unison hardware design, the Scalable Informatics Operating System (SIOS), and the excellent BeeGFS filesystem.”

Interview: A New Approach to High Performance, Massive Density Storage

Scalable Informatics has worked worked for years to develop the FastPath Unison storage appliance, a device that hits the sweet spot for HPC. “Tremendous density is meaningless if you can’t move data in or out at a reasonable data rate. And as you scale up your storage, the definition of a reasonable data rate should scale up as well.”
