AFRL Unveils Sharable Classified Supercomputing Capability
The Air Force Research Laboratory has unveiled the first-ever shared classified Department of Defense high performance computing capability at the AFRL DOD Supercomputing Resource Center. “The ability to share supercomputers at higher classification levels will allow programs to get their supercomputing work done quickly while maintaining necessary security. Programs will not need to spend their budget and waste time constructing their own secure computer facilities, and buying and accrediting smaller computers for short-term work. This new capability will save billions for the DOD while providing additional access to state-of-the-art computing.”

AFRL Taps IBM to Build Brain-Inspired AI Supercomputer
Today IBM announced they are collaborating with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) on a first-of-a-kind brain-inspired supercomputing system powered by a 64-chip array of the IBM TrueNorth Neurosynaptic System. The scalable platform IBM is building for AFRL will feature an end-to-end software ecosystem designed to enable deep neural-network learning and information discovery.

AFRL Fires Up 1.28 Petaflop “Lightning” Supercomputer
Today Wright-Patterson Air Force Base announced the installation of a $20.8 million Cray supercomputer that will double the available processing power at the base’s Air Force Research Laboratory. Named after the F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter, the 1.28 Petaflop supercomputer will be used to streamline testing time and cut costs on important research initiatives such as hypersonic flight, heavy-lift space rockets, and exotic rocket fuels.
