Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico is set to announce details today on the next phase of operation for the state’s big supercomputing investment, Encanto. The hefty SGI ICE system is set to be linked to eight “gateway” sites around the state of New Mexico. Eventually, the site list is said to grow to 33.
According to Richardson, the gateways will “bring the highest level of supercomputing to every corner of the state, and that will give New Mexicans more economic development opportunities.”
Encanto has come under fire as of late. According to certain organizations within the state of New Mexico, the supercomputing project has become a serious money pit rather than a money making operation. Keep an ear out for the exact details of Richardson’s release later today.
