Cray announced a big win for their US Federal business today. They have officially swept all three system awards as a part of the DoD’s High Performance Computing Modernization Program Technology Insertion for 2010 [HPCMP TI10']. The award is includes multiple years of services alongside three large system installs. All told, its worth $45 million, making it the largest single award in HPCMP history.
The three systems will be delivered to the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) located at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio; the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center (ARSC) in Fairbanks, Alaska; and the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
To solve today’s hardest research and development challenges, we have to employ leading-edge scalable software and the world’s fastest supercomputers,” said Mr. Cray Henry, director of the DoD’s HPCMP. “We are excited to get the next generation Cray supercomputers working to solve our problems.”
The target system deliverables consist of Cray’s upcoming “Baker” generation of supercomputer. The new systems will also include the upcoming “Gemini” interconnect.

This is great news for Cray. Outside of the obvious system deliveries, it includes multiple years of “human” services [likely in the form of applications analysis and systems management]. If Cray successfully delivers the systems on time and on budget, the revenue will help them sustain a mode of profitability.
