8 Gbps Fibre Channel

Ashlee Vance over at The Register has an article highlighting 2007 as the year we’ll get to 8 Gbps Fibre Channel hardware.

QLogic and Emulex appear to have set two of the more aggressive 8-Gbit/s switch strategies with both vendors committing to at least end of 2007 shipments.

The article emphasizes video and server virtualization as the commercial motivators for the technology, but of course we’ll all use it to write out those 100 TB user data files.

Not for filesharing bootlegged copies of Star Wars around the center. That would be wrong.
