Mellanox Rolls Out SDN Ethernet Switches

MellanoxToday Mellanox announced the addition of three new top-of-rack Open Ethernet software-defined networking (SDN) switches to its 10/40/56 Gigabit Ethernet switch product portfolio. Based on Mellanox’s SwitchX-2 switch ICs, the new SX1400, SX1700 and SX1710 Ethernet switches provide enhanced control plane capabilities and allow for the design of hyperscale data center networks and control-intensive cloud applications.

These new 10/40/56 Gigabit Ethernet switch systems start a new era for our existing Mellanox Open Ethernet switch portfolio,” said Gilad Shainer, vice president of marketing at Mellanox Technologies. “These Ethernet switches are optimized for maximum ROI and designed for high performance, energy-savings and high-availability. They provide our customers with an enhanced user experience while enabling superior cloud and data center application performance.”

The new Open Ethernet switches provide a platform that can accommodate user applications as virtual machines hosted and executed by the switches’ dual and quad core CPUs. The new capability enables users to optimize their data center networking infrastructure to their needs and to maximize their application performance. Application developers can take advantage of the programmable environment for differentiation and to better serve their users. Network administrators can utilize the switch instead of dedicated servers for serving their network needs, hence reducing their OPEX and CAPEX.

The SX1400 is an optimized top-of-rack switch providing non-blocking throughput. With a quad core processor and 48 10GbE SFP+ ports and 12 40/56GbE uplink QSFP+ ports, it features an ultra-low latency of 250ns. The SX1700 high performance TOR switch has a quad core processor and delivers up to 4.03Tb/s of non-blocking throughput. The SX1710 high density TOR switch has a dual core processor and up to 64 10GbE SFP+ ports or 36 40/56GbE QSFP ports. The SX1700 and SX1710 switches are ideal solutions for connectivity to servers and uplinks to the next level of aggregation switching.

The new systems run on the MLNX-OS software and are fully compatible with the existing Mellanox systems and other standard Ethernet switches, providing existing users interoperability with their active installations.
