The DST Group in Australia is seeking a Discipline Leader for Services and Technology in our Job of the Week.

DST Group is offering positions for passionate, innovative professionals interested in joining us on the journey to create and provide leading edge data management in support of Australia’s sovereign defence and national interests. As the Discipline Leader High Performance Computing (HPC) Services and Technology you will ideally be a highly experienced Computer Scientist or Engineer able to develop, deliver and sustain a complex world-class portfolio of secure HPC systems, systems support and related HPC technology including data management and visualisation.

As a critical member of the HPC Program leadership team you will work collaboratively to provide secure HPC systems, systems support and related HPC technology required to meet researcher needs. In the first instance, you will assist Defence achieve the architecture, design and deployment of world-class Computational and Data Science infrastructure providing critical sovereign capability in Defence and National Security research. You will lead all aspects of the delivery of HPC services and technology at the DST HPC Centre including the provision of guidance on the selection and application of fit-for-purpose HPC technology solutions. This will include all aspects of the provision of secure HPC capabilities for major projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the delivery of HPC services and technology needed to meet Defence and National Security research goals in the most efficient and effective manner
  • Provide innovative problem-solving approaches that enhance the HPC technical capabilities of a critical, secure national HPC capability
  • Understand Australia’s National Science and Technology priorities and the strategic objectives of the National Security Community, Defence and DST and contribute to their development
  • Nurture and maintain relationships with major customers, national and international research partners and major projects to understand their needs; advise, design and implement solutions that meet agreed research infrastructure objectives; advise on major operational and strategic issues and opportunities, including co-investment funding to acquire, install and support the required HPC capabilities
  • Work collaboratively with the HPC Research Support Team to: a. identify research project follow-on work to ensure continuity and enhancement of HPC related services and technology b. ensure that science and engineering codes are targeted to the appropriate compute platform, including accelerators and potential new and emerging architectures c. build and optimise research workflows and storage systems to boost the efficiency and reproducibility of research projects using the HPC d. assist researchers in the design of experiments to ensure scientific reproducibility and optimal use of HPC systems and data management resources
  • Accountable for the availability, reliability and integrity of secure HPC systems
  • Provide management reporting on the HPC systems including usage and system statistics that ensure that the system is used effectively and efficiently in the pursuit of research outcomes
  • Mentor staff in the development of technical, project, and related organisational/support skills
