Intel CTO to give SC09 opening address

SC09 continues to round out its list of speakers, and they are definitely A-list. They announced that former Vice President Al Gore would be speaking back in April (and insideHPC was tickled to offer you an exclusive interview on that announcement). Gore’s message will be delivered on Thursday, which is a little odd for SC since they usually put their headliner in on Tuesday. Now they’ve announced [PDF] that Intel CTO (and head of Intel Labs) Justin Rattner will be in the opening slot Tuesday morning

SC09 logo“Justin’s vision and leadership in the late 80s and early 90s lead to the first teraflop supercomputer and helped shape the technology direction and innovation that drove an exciting era of parallel supercomputing,” said Wilfred Pinfold, SC09 General Chair. “He is uniquely qualified to talk about the use of 3D Internet technology for immersive science, which is one of the three identified thrust areas for this year’s conference.”

Pinfold continued, “The output of today’s supercomputing applications is complex and often highly visual. Creating a persistent, standardized environment where this output can be modeled will make it easier to share and explore. Justin has championed the creation of tools that use the unique features of virtual environments to explore these models and facilitate education, collaboration, and scientific understanding. His opening address is sure to be an insightful discussion of keen interest to the entire HPC community.”

Intel dominates the world of HPC and supercomputing these days, with about 80% of all systems in the most recent Top500 running on Intel processors. What they have to say seems particularly relevant to the SC audience.
