Podcast: Spectra Logic Report looks at the State of Data Storage

Today Spectra Logic their annual review of the data storage industry. The report provides insight for storage and media manufacturers, application developers and enterprise storage customers into the trends, pricing and technology shaping the data storage industry, and projects future storage needs and the technologies with the best chance of satisfying them. “The world’s repository of data is growing more rapidly than we could have imagined. At the same time, organizations are more reliant than ever on digital assets, and must protect and preserve access to this data forever,” said Spectra Logic CEO Nathan Thompson. “This is a unique time for the data storage industry, and we are proud to take a leadership role in helping the industry anticipate the trends, tiers and technologies of the future.”

Spectra BlackPearl Gets Globus Client Certification

Today Spectra Logic announced that Globus has completed client certification for its Spectra BlackPearl Converged Storage System. BlackPearl allows customers in university, high performance computing (HPC) and research organizations to seamlessly store data to disk, tape and cloud storage using a unified interface provided by Globus. Globus software-as-a-service (SaaS) simplifies file transfer, sharing and data publication for geographically diverse research communities worldwide. Spectra’s BlackPearl Converged Storage System integrates efficiently with the Globus service and delivers a fully integrated storage solution built to transfer data between Globus users, reducing overall data management time, cost and complexities.

Hammer PLC to Distribute Spectra Logic Storage in Europe

Today UK-based Hammer PLC announced that it will be a distributer of Spectra Logic storage technology in Europe. “This is an excellent opportunity to increase our high-performance computing offering to our partners and customers,” said Jason Beeson, Hammer’s Commercial Director. “By adding Spectra Logic’s bespoke data workflow storage solutions we can reach a whole new genre of highly data-dependent users who are seeking a complete data workflow, from input and day-to-day use right through to deep storage and archiving.”

Spectra Logic Celebrates Ten Years of Profitability

Today Spectra Logic announced its tenth consecutive year of profitability at the close of calendar year 2016. Spectra Logic’s success is rooted in investing in industry-leading research and development to build and improve its archive solutions, creating tailored solutions for key verticals that incorporate software and hardware to solve customer workflow and management issues, and focusing on digital preservation that protects customer data forever, while minimizing impact on business processes.

HPE Goes All-Flash for Public Cloud with 3PAR, Lowers Long Term Storage Costs with Spectra Logic

Today HPE announced today a comprehensive initiative that brings together the best of on-premises performance, application availability, and control with the convenience and agility of public cloud consumption models.

Quantum Names Molly Rector VP of Marketing

Today Quantum announced that Molly Rector has joined the company as vice president, marketing. Rector brings more than 15 years of enterprise storage experience to the role, including 12 years as a chief marketing officer — most recently at DDN and previously at archive storage vendor Spectra Logic.

Spectra BlackPearl Offers Direct Archive to AWS

Private cloud storage enabled by BlackPearl provides the best option for balancing performance and cost; however, some customer workflows benefit greatly from incorporating a public cloud storage infrastructure,” said Matt Starr, Spectra Logic’s CTO. “Public cloud works best when a disaster recovery copy is needed; when wide data distribution is called for; to create geographic dispersion of data; and when other cloud-based features can be leveraged, such as automatic transcoding. The new Spectra hybrid storage ecosystem means that Spectra customers don’t have to choose between public and private cloud; BlackPearl brings them together seamlessly.”

NASA Boosts Pleiades Supercomputer with Broadwell CPUs and LTO Tape

NASA Ames reports that SGI has completed an important upgrade to Pleiades supercomputer. “As of July 1, 2016, all of the remaining racks of Intel Xeon X5670 (Westmere) processors were removed from Pleiades to make room for an additional 14 Intel Xeon E5-2680v4 (Broadwell) racks, doubling the number of Broadwell nodes to 2,016 and increasing the system’s theoretical peak performance to 7.25 petaflops. Pleiades now has a total of 246,048 CPU cores across 161 racks containing four different Intel Xeon processor types, and provides users with more than 900 terabytes of memory.”

Spectra Logic Rolls Out World’s Largest Capacity Tape Library

Today Spectra Logic announced the Spectra TFinity ExaScale Edition, the world’s largest and most richly-featured tape storage system. “Since 2008, Spectra Logic has worked with engineers in the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Division at NASA’s Ames Research Center, in California’s Silicon Valley, first deploying a Spectra tape library with 22 petabytes of capacity. According to NASA, the Spectra tape library’s capacity has grown to approximately one half an Exabyte of archival storage today. After extensive testing over the past year, NASA recently deployed a Spectra TFinity ExaScale Edition in their 24×7 production HPC environment.”
