Spectra Logic Report: Digital Data Storage Outlook 2019

Today Spectra Logic announced the publication of “Digital Data Storage Outlook 2019,” the company’s fourth annual report on the data storage industry. “This report provides a high-level snapshot of the trends that will influence technological advancements in the data storage industry, and the workflows that will impact the way the world uses and preserves its digital information for the long term.”

Preliminary Agenda Posted for HP-CAST at ISC 2019

Hewlett Packard Enterprise has posted their Structural Agenda for HP-CAST at ISC 2019. The event takes place June 14-15 in Frankfurt, Germany. “HP-CAST provides guidance to Hewlett Packard Enterprise on the essential development and support issues for HPC systems.”

Spectra Logic and Arcitecta team up for Genomics Data Management

Spectra Logic is teaming with Arcitecta for tackling the massive datasets used in life sciences. The two companies will showcase their joint solutions at the BioIT World conference this week in Boston. “Addressing the needs of the life sciences market with reliable data storage lies at the heart of the Spectra and Arcitecta relationship,” said Spectra CTO Matt Starr. “This joint solution enables customers to better manage their data and metadata by optimizing multiple storage targets, retrieving data efficiently and tracking content and resources.”

Spectra Swarm Brings Ethernet Connectivity to LTO Tape Libraries

Today Spectra Logic announced enhancements to its family of tape libraries that help end users simplify and enhance their workflows. With the introduction of Spectra Swarm ethernet connectivity, the company makes tape connectivity easier and adds a modern interface to LTO tape libraries by leveraging all of the same infrastructure and networking capabilities as the rest of the equipment in a modern data center. Spectra Swarm is tested and qualified to work with Spectra LTO tape libraries — Spectra Stack through Spectra T950.

In this video, engineers install a Spectra Logic tape library at STFC’s Scientific Data Centre at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK. The new Spectra TFinity Tape Library has an initial capacity of 65PB. “This system will provide for the predicted data-growth from existing groups over the next decade, and an active archive for JASMIN users and the IRIS science communities. It brings SCD’s total tape storage capacity within the RAL Scientific Data Centre to 240PB.”

Spectra Logic Unveils World’s Largest Data Storage Machine with 2 Exabytes Capacity

Today Spectra Logic announced the industry’s most advanced tape technology, the IBM TS1160, for use in Spectra’s enterprise-class tape libraries. Spectra’s TFinity ExaScale, T950, T950v and T380 Tape Libraries will support the new tape drive and media. When fully populated with the TS1160 tape drives and media, a TFinity ExaScale will store and allow access to more than 2 exabytes (2,000 petabytes) of data, making Spectra’s TFinity ExaScale Tape Library the largest single data storage machine in the world.

Spectra Logic Enhances Tape Library Offerings

Today Spectra Logic announced a set of updates to its enterprise tape libraries. The enhancements benefit customers in government, scientific research, high performance computing, media and entertainment, and public cloud environments who must preserve massive amounts of data long term. “In today’s world, organizations that extract more value from their data gain a competitive edge,” said Nathan Thompson, CEO of Spectra Logic. “Advancements in tape library functionality benefit organizations with large-scale computing platforms, enabling them to use, retain and, in some cases, retrieve enormous amounts of data quickly, securely and affordably for the long term.”

Spectra Logic rolls out New Tape Library Offerings

Today Spectra Logic announced a pair of new tape library products. These products include the all-new Spectra Stack, a highly scalable, modular and affordable tape library that allows users to start with a single tape drive and 10 tape slots, growing incrementally as their data needs increase, and the new Spectra T950v Tape Library, an affordable, entry-level model of the popular high-end Spectra T950 Tape Library family.

Radio Free Looks at why the Tape Storage Market is falling on Hard Times

In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team asks the question: Is the Cloud Killing the Tape Market? The issue came up this week that Spectra Logic is laying off 9 percent of its workforce. “The technology has had its ups and downs over the years, and things look positive for it once again as cloud providers have adopted it as a cost-effective way to handle the growing amount of data being generated, TechTarget, a marketing firm, reported.”
