TACC to power HSM Archives with Quantum Corp Tape Libraries

Today Quantum Corp. announced the Texas Advanced Computing Center has selected Quantum StorNext as their archive file system, with a Quantum Scalar i6000 tape library providing dedicated Hierarchical Storage Management. “Our ability to archive data is vital to TACC’s success, and the combination of StorNext as our archive file system managing Quantum hybrid storage, Scalar tape and our DDN primary disk will enable us to meet our commitments to the talented researchers who depend on TACC now and in the future,” said Tommy Minyard, Director of Advanced Computing at TACC.

Versity Open Sources Next Generation Archiving Filesystem

Today Versity Software announced that it has open sourced ScoutFS, a new scale out archiving filesystem. “ScoutFS is the first GPL archiving file system ever released, creating an inherently safer and more user-friendly option for storing archival data where accessibility over very large time scales and the removal of vendor-specific risk is a key consideration.”

NSF Awards Instrumentation Grant for Research Data Archiving at University of Oklahoma

Today the NSF announced that a University of Oklahoma team led by Henry Neeman is the recipient of a National Science Foundation Major Research Instrumentation grant. The $967,755 award will be used for a new academic research data storage instrument—a massive tape archive known as the OU and Regional Research Store, which will serve as a national model for affordable, large-scale, multi-institutional storage.

DDN and IBM Team on 50 TB per Day, Inter-Continental Active Archive Solution

Today DDN announced that Yahoo Japan has deployed an active archive system jointly developed by DDN and IBM Japan. The new system allows Yahoo! JAPAN to cache dozens of petabytes of data from its OpenStack Swift storage solution in a Japan-based data center, and transfer data to a U.S.-based data center at an astonishing rate of 50 TB of data per day – thus enabling energy cost savings of 74 percent due to lower energy rates in the United States versus Japan, while ensuring fast data access regardless of location.

Learnings from Operating 200 PB of Disk-Based Storage

Gleb Budman from Backblaze presented this talk at the 2016 MSST Conference. “For Q1 2016 we are reporting on 61,590 operational hard drives used to store encrypted customer data in our data center. In Q1 2016, the hard drives in our data center, past and present, totaled over one billion hours in operation to date. That’s nearly 42 million days or 114,155 years worth of spinning hard drives. Let’s take a look at what these hard drives have been up to.”
