New Report: PRACE in the EuroHPC Era
The Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe has published a new report: PRACE in the EuroHPC Era. PRACE is an international non-profit association with its seat in Brussels. “The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking will advance the European supercomputer landscape by completing the infrastructure pyramid at the top level with European leadership-class supercomputers. In a context of a strong international competition with USA, China and Japan, this development is highly expected by all stakeholders of HPC in Europe. For the European HPC users from science and industry, i.e. industrials and SMEs, the seamless integration of these new top-level systems and services into the existing European HPC-ecosystem is an issue of paramount importance.”
Hyperion Research Announces HPC Innovation Excellence Award Winners
Hyperion Research recently announced the newest recipients of the HPC Innovation Excellence Awards. “High performance computing contributes enormously to scientific progress, economic competitiveness, national security and the quality of human life,” said Bob Sorensen, Hyperion Research vice president of research and technology. “The winners of these awards have been judged to be among the world’s best at exploiting HPC to achieve important real-world innovations.”
European Supercomputing Centers Adopt Joint Procurement Process
Some of Europe’s leading supercomputing centers have joined forces to create a buyers group that will enable joint public procurement of new HPC systems. “The new partnership of four public HPC centers (BSC, CINECA, JSC, and GENCI), located in four different countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, and France) means that new supercomputers can be procured through a market consultation for the purchase of HPC systems. This group will operate under as part of the Public Procurement of Innovative Solutions for High-Performance Computing (PPI4HPC) project.”
Lenovo Boosts Marconi Supercomputer to 6.2 Petaflops with Intel Xeon Phi
“Phase one at CINECA, an academic consortium, was completed in May 2016 – coming in at 1.7 Petaflops, which at the time it was the largest Intel Omni-Path Fabric system in the world. Lenovo and CINECA are pleased to announce the delivery and installation of phase two, a 3,600 node Intel Xeon Phi processor which is interconnected with 100Gb Intel Omni-Path fabric – delivering 6.2 Petaflops of performance.”
