Report: Security Firm Says HPC Clusters under Attack: ‘Level of Sophistication Rarely Seen in Linux Malware’

This is an updated version of a story first publised on Feb. 1. UK technology industry publication PCR published a story today stating that an international data security firm, ESET, has reported the identification of a malware called Kobalos that targets supercomputing clusters. They also said they have been working with security experts at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research and other organizations on stemming attacks. “Among other targets was a large Asian ISP, a North American endpoint security vendor as well as several privately held servers,” PCR reported.

Job of the Week: Linux System Administrator at UC Riverside

UC Riverside is seeking a Linux System Administrator in our Job of the Week. “UC Riverside’s research computing infrastructure is provided by a central HPC facility. This facility operates Linux clusters with over 6,000 CPU cores, 75TB of total system RAM and several GPU nodes. Big Data storage is handled by a centralized GPFS-based storage cluster with over 4PB of disk space for production and backup storage. The incumbent will be part of a team responsible for the systems administration of this HPC infrastructure, including development of software for parallel computing, network management, data security and user training.”

Simplifying NVIDIA GPU Driver Deployment on Red Hat Linux

Over at the NVIDIA blog, Pramod Ramarao writes that NVIDIA and Red Hat have worked closely to improve the user experience when installing and updating NVIDIA software on RHEL, including GPU drivers and CUDA. “The NVIDIA / Red Hat partnership continues to grow and there are many integration efforts across Red Hat’s and NVIDIA’s product portfolios on projects as diverse as video drivers, heterogeneous memory management (HMM), KVM support for virtual GPUs, and Kubernetes.”
