Spectra BlackPearl Gets Globus Client Certification

Today Spectra Logic announced that Globus has completed client certification for its Spectra BlackPearl Converged Storage System. BlackPearl allows customers in university, high performance computing (HPC) and research organizations to seamlessly store data to disk, tape and cloud storage using a unified interface provided by Globus. Globus software-as-a-service (SaaS) simplifies file transfer, sharing and data publication for geographically diverse research communities worldwide. Spectra’s BlackPearl Converged Storage System integrates efficiently with the Globus service and delivers a fully integrated storage solution built to transfer data between Globus users, reducing overall data management time, cost and complexities.

Video: Spectra Logic Changes Storage Economics with ArcticBlue at SC15

Matt Starr from Spectra Logic describes the company’s new ArcticBlue nearline disk storage system. “If you think about a tape subsystem, it’s probably the best cost footprint, density footprint that you can get. ArticBlue brings in kind of the benefits of tape from a cost perspective, but the speed and performance of a disk subsystem. Ten cents a gig versus seven cents a gig, three cents difference. You may want to deploy a little bit of ArcticBlue in your archive when you’re putting it behind BlackPearl as opposed to just an all tape archive.”

Argonne Training Program on Extreme-Scale Set for August, 2015

Argonne will host their 2015 ATPESC Training Program on Extreme-Scale Computing for computational scientists. The event takes place August 2-14 in Chicago. “The program provides intensive hands-on training on the key skills, approaches and tools to design, implement, and execute computational science and engineering applications on current supercomputers and the HPC systems of the future. As a bridge to that future, this two-week program to be held at the Pheasant Run Resort in suburban Chicago fills many gaps that exist in the training computational scientists typically receive through formal education or shorter courses.”
