Appentra Joins OpenPOWER Foundation for Auto-Parallelization

Today Appentra announced it has joined the OpenPOWER Foundation, an open development community based on the POWER microprocessor architecture. Founded in 2012, Appentra is a technology company providing software tools for guided parallelization in high-performance computing and HPC-like technologies. “The development model of the OpenPOWER Foundation is one that elicits collaboration and represents a new way in exploiting and innovating around processor technology.” says Calista Redmond, Director of OpenPOWER Global Alliances at IBM. “With the Power architecture designed for Big Data and Cloud, new OpenPOWER Foundation members like Appentra, will be able to add their own innovations on top of the technology to create new applications that capitalize on emerging workloads.”

NCI Australia Joins OpenPOWER Foundation

Australia’s National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) has become the first Australian organization to join the OpenPOWER Foundation, a global open technical community enabling collaborative development and industry growth. NCI has additionally purchased four of IBM’s latest Power System servers for High Performance Computing (HPC) to underpin its research efforts through artificial intelligence, deep learning, high performance data analytics and other compute-heavy workloads.

13.7 Petaflop MareNostrum 4 Supercomputer Coming to BSC

Today the Barcelona Supercomputing Center announced plans to MareNostrum 4, a 13.7 Petaflop supercomputer that will be 12.4 times more powerful than the current MareNostrum 3 system. In a contract valued at almost €30 million, IBM will integrate in one sole machine using its own technologies alongside those of Lenovo, Intel, and Fujitsu.

BeeGFS Updates with built-in Metadata High-Availability

Today ThinkParQ announced the immediate availability of BeeGFS version 6.0. As the first release in a new versioning scheme, release 6.0 is the direct successor of the 2015.03 release series, which was in fact the 5th BeeGFS major release. “This new release is another big step for the development of BeeGFS”, says Christian Mohrbacher, development lead of BeeGFS. “In combination with the high availability features of the BeeGFS storage service, which were introduced in the 2015.03 major release last year, fully fault-tolerant storage systems can now be built by solely using BeeGFS-internal functionality.”

NVLink Speeds Deep Learning on New OpenPOWER Servers

Over at the IBM System Blog, Sumit Gupta writes that the company’s new IBM Power System 822LC with Nvidia Tesla P100 GPUs is already demonstrating impressive performance on Deep Learning training applications. “A single S822LC for HPC with four NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPUs is 2.2 times faster reaching 50 percent accuracy in AlexNet than a server with four NVIDIA Tesla M40 GPUs!”
