Dell EMC Steps up with AMD EPYC Servers for HPC, SDN, and the Edge

Today Dell EMC announced three new servers powered by AMD EPYC processors. “The Advanced High-Performance Computing Center at the University of Arkansas Fayetteville runs Molecular Dynamics simulation the open-source code: LAMMPS (Large-Scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator). We found the Dell EMC PowerEdge 7415 single socket server with the AMD EPYC processor runs faster than existing dual socket servers, allowing us to support our continued need for more bandwidth and additional cores, but using less power in a smaller space.”

VMware moves Virtualized HPC Forward at SC17

VMware Rolls Out vSphere Scale-Out Edition for Big Data and HPC Workloads

Today VMware introduced vSphere Scale-Out Edition for Big Data and HPC Workloads, a new solution in the vSphere product line aimed at Big Data and HPC workloads. VMware vSphere Scale-Out edition includes the features and functions most useful to Big Data and HPC workloads such as those provided by the core vSphere hypervisor and the vSphere Distributed Switch. “This new solution also enables the ability to rapidly change and provision compute nodes. The solution will be offered at an attractive price point, optimized for Big Data and HPC environments.”

The Long Rise of HPC in the Cloud

China’s HPC Vendors Look to US and European Markets

Who are the world’s most important vendors of supercomputers, at least as measured by the number of systems they have in the Top500? HP is the leader with a 31 per cent share; Cray is number two with just under 14 per cent. So far, so unsurprising. But what has been little remarked upon is that in third place – with 49 systems, or 9.8 per cent of the Top500 list – is the Chinese vendor, Sugon. And both Sugon and Inspur, the other main Chinese vendor, have their sights set on expanding still further, with trade missions to Europe and setting up partnerships and subsidiaries in both Europe and the USA.
