“Computers as we know them are disappearing from view,’ asserts Koen De Bosschere, Professor at the Engineering Faculty of Ghent University, Belgium, and Coordinator of the HiPEAC network. “The evolution from desktop PC will not stop at smartphone and tablet: the devices and systems that will allow us to automate key infrastructures, such as transport, power grids and monitoring of medical conditions, are bringing us into the age of artificial intelligence. This does not mean man-sized robots, but smart devices that we program and then interact with, such as intelligent personal assistants and self-driving vehicles.”

One of the big pieces of news that we were very proud of was our presence in the top 10, 4 of them are actually powered by Seagate. Even more impressive is that 100% of the newest systems are powered by Seagate. When you peel that layer back just a little bit further, actually three of those four systems are actually from Europe and the Middle East.”

The good folks at the European Network on High Performance and Embedded Architecture and Compilation (HiPEAC) have launched a call for contributions to the 2017 edition of the HiPEAC Vision, which will set out the way forward for computing systems over the next ten years. “Published every two years, HiPEAC’s definitive roadmap provides guidance for policy makers and technologists on key issues in the area of computing systems, such as security, reliability and energy efficiency.”
Bright Computing Receives Horizon 2020 Grant for Advancing System Management Technology

Today Bright Computing announced it has been awarded a grant of more than 1.5 million Euros by the European Commission under its Horizon 2020 program. The grant will be used for the Bright Beyond HPC program, which focuses on enhancing and scaling Bright’s industry-leading management platform for advanced IT infrastructure, including high performance computing clusters, big data clusters, and OpenStack-based private clouds.

German Supercomputing Sites Become Centers of Excellence for Horizon 2020

Today the European Commission announced HLRS, JSC, and LRZ have been named “Centers of Excellence for computing applications. Funded by the EC and the Horizon 2020 program, the new Centers of Excellence will provide their petascale HPC infrastructure for developing services for European users in science and industry.
