HPC4Energy Innovation Program Funds Manufacturing Research

Today the High Performance Computing for Energy Innovation program (HPC4EI) announced the nine public/private projects awarded more than $2 million from the DOE, with aims of improving energy production, enhancing or developing new material properties and reducing energy usage in manufacturing. “We see increasing interest by both industry and the DOE Applied Energy Offices to leverage the world-class computational capabilities of leading national laboratories to address the significant challenges in improving the efficiency of our national energy footprint,” said HPC4EI Director Robin Miles.”

HPC4Materials Program Funds Nine Projects to Fight Hot Corrosion Degradation

The Department of Energy today announced the first round of awardees for the new HPC4Materials (HPC4Mtls) Program. “We are excited about adding a materials portfolio to the HPC4EnergyInnovation umbrella program,” said acting HPC4Materials Director Robin Miles. “Understanding material properties at the macro level based on atomic scale effects is a sweet spot for HPC capabilities. New materials are essential for improved energy efficiency in electrical power plants and advanced vehicles.”

HPC4Manufacturing Program Seeks Industry Proposals

The Department of Energy is seeking industry proposals for public/private projects aimed at applying high performance computing to industry challenges for the advancement of energy innovation. “We are seeing some significant successes with orders of magnitude reduction in simulation times and higher fidelity simulations that more closely match the reality of the manufacturing process. With this solicitation we plan to continue to expand the reach of our program to new companies to help solve new and different problems.”

HPC4Mfg Program Selects New Industry Projects

Today the DOE announced $1.87 million for seven projects to advance innovation in U.S. manufacturing through HPC. “The HPC4Mfg program leverages world-class technical expertise with high performance computing to tackle manufacturing challenges uniquely solved by computer modeling. By applying modeling, simulation, and data analytics to key manufacturing problems, the program can aid in decision-making, optimize processes and design, improve quality, predict performance and failure, reduce or eliminate testing, and shorten the time to market.”

LANL Steps Up to HPC for Materials Program

“Understanding and predicting material performance under extreme environments is a foundational capability at Los Alamos,” said David Teter, Materials Science and Technology division leader at Los Alamos. “We are well suited to apply our extensive materials capabilities and our high-performance computing resources to industrial challenges in extreme environment materials, as this program will better help U.S. industry compete in a global market.”

New HPC for Materials Program to Help American Industry

Earlier this week, U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry announced a new high-performance computing initiative that will help U.S. industry accelerate the development of new or improved materials for use in severe environments. “The High Performance Computing for Materials Program will provide opportunities for our industry partners to access the high-performance computing capabilities and expertise of DOE’s national labs as they work to create and improve technologies that combat extreme conditions,” said Secretary Perry.
