Altair PBS Works Steps Up to Exascale and the Cloud

In this video from SC19, Sam Mahalingam from Altair describes how the company is enhancing PBS Works software to ease the migration of HPC workloads to the Cloud. “Argonne National Laboratory has teamed with Altair to implement a new scheduling system that will be employed on the Aurora supercomputer, slated for delivery in 2021. PBS Works runs big — 50,000 nodes in one cluster, 10,000,000 jobs in a queue, and 1,000 concurrent active users.”

Altair PBS Works to Optimize Gadi Supercomputer at NCI

Supercomputing in Australia is slated to get a major boost this November with the deployment of the Fujitsu-made “Gadi” supercomputer, estimated to be 10 times faster than its predecessor. NCI will use Altair’s PBS Works software suite — including Altair Control, Altair Access, Altair Monitor, and Altair PBS Professional — to optimize job scheduling, manage workloads, and perform detailed analysis on the new Gadi system. “This new machine will keep Australian research and the 5,000 researchers who use it, at the cutting edge. It will help us get smarter with our big data. It will add even more brawn to the considerable brains already tapping into NCI.”

Fujitsu to Deploy Gadi Supercomputer at NCI in Australia

Today Fujitsu announced a contract to upgrade the Australia’s fastest supercomputer at NCI. Called “Gadi,” the new supercomputer will replace the NCI’s current supercomputer, Raijin, which was also provided by Fujitsu back in 2012. “The upgrade of this critical infrastructure will see Australia continue to play a leading role in addressing some of our greatest global challenges. This new machine will keep Australian research and the 5,000 researchers who use it at the cutting-edge.”

NEC signs up as Reseller for Altair PBS Professional

Today Altair announced a global VAR agreement with NEC Corporation to market and sell industry-leading HPC workload manager and job scheduler Altair PBS Professional. As a result of the agreement, NEC has worldwide rights to bundle the PBS Professional solution with all NEC X86/Linux systems. “By combining Altair’s workload management technology and NEC’s hardware solution, we are confident that we can contribute to the realization of customers’ research needs quickly, easily and flexibly.”

How PBS Works Makes HPC Easy to Use

In this video from ISC 2017, Bill Nitzberg from Altair demonstrates how easy it is to launch jobs with PBS Pro. “Altair’s PBS Works workload management suite is used by thousands of organizations worldwide to simplify the administration and use of HPC clusters, clouds and supercomputing environments.”

Video: PBS Pro Manages Workloads at NCI in Australia

Rodger Edberg from NCI presented this talk at the PBS User Group meeting in Las Vegas. “As Australia’s national research computing service, the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) provides world-class, high-end services to Australian researchers, including access to advanced computational and data-intensive methods, support, and high-performance infrastructure. NCI supports computationally-based research with a focus on the environment, climate and earth system science in particular. Since 2007, NCI’s infrastructure investments, which exceed $80M, have been provided by the Australian Government under its National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) and Super Science Initiatives.”

PBSCloud.io – A new SaaS platform for Deploying HPC Appliances in the Cloud

In this video, Jérémie Bourdoncle from Altair describes the company’s innovative PBSCloud.io, which is a new SAS platform to for deploying HPC Appliances in Public and Private Clouds. “PBScloud.io is a cloud platform that lets you easily create, manage, deploy, and monitor HPC appliances for public clouds, private clouds, and bare metal.”

PBS Works will Power New Supercomputer at BASF

Over at the Altair Blog, Jochen Krebs writes that the new HPC cluster at BASF will run PBS Works workload management software. “What does it take to go from months to mere days in gaining results when conducting research? Supercomputing now plays a vital role in the advancement of systems efficiency across industries. On March 17th, BASF and HPE announced in a press release that BASF has chosen HPE to build a new supercomputer for chemical research projects. HPE’s Apollo System supercomputer will help BASF to reduce computer simulation and modeling times from months to days and will drive the digitalization of BASF’s worldwide research activities.”

The Future of HPC Application Management in a Post Cloud World

The prevalency of cloud computing has changed the HPC landscape necessaiting HPC management tools that can manage and simplify complex enviornments in order to optimize flexibility and speed. Altair’s new solution PBS Cloud Manager makes it easy to build and manage HPC application stacks.

HPC Across the Enterprise: How HPC Transforms the Corporate IT Ecosystem

Thomas Leung from the GE Global Research Center presented this talk at the PBS Works User Group. “The commercial world uses significant HPC resources for simulation and product design. An increasing number of HPC systems are deployed in the commercial space and their scale is getting larger and larger. These advanced systems push limits in every aspect of Enterprise IT. Accommodating such systems within the enterprise is a challenge, and there have been many recent changes to enterprise IT infrastructures and architectures resulting from the need to support HPC.”
