UberCloud Publishes Compendium of Cloud HPC Case Studies

Our friends at the UberCloud have published the 2018 edition of their Compendium of Cloud HPC Case Studies. “The goal of the UberCloud Experiment is to perform engineering simulation experiments in the HPC cloud with real engineering applications in order to understand the roadblocks to success and how to overcome them. The Compendium is a way of sharing these results with the broader HPC community.”

Univa partners with UberCloud

Today Univa announced a new global partnership and reseller agreement with UberCloud. Under terms of the agreement, UberCloud, a leading HPC cloud provider, will resell Univa Grid Engine and related Univa products to UberCloud’s growing community of HPC customers. “By deploying packaged HPC applications in containers, and managing them with Univa Grid Engine, users become productive immediately. They can focus on their work rather than spending time troubleshooting complicated HPC software stacks.”

Living Heart Project: Using HPC in the Cloud to Save Lives

Burak Yenier and Francisco Sahli gave this talk at the Stanford HPC Conference. “Cardiac arrhythmia can be a potentially lethal side effect of medications. Before a new drug reaches the market, pharmaceutical companies need to check for the risk of inducing arrhythmias. Currently, this process takes years and involves costly animal and human studies. In this project, the Living Matter Laboratory of Stanford University developed a new software tool enabling drug developers to quickly assess the viability of a new compound. During this session we will look at how High Performance Computing in the Cloud is being used to prevent severe side effects and save lives.”

Video: Inside the Award-Winning Stanford Living Heart Project

In this video, Staffan Hansson from AdvaniaDC chats with Wolfgang Gentzsch from The UberCloud about the award-winning Stanford Living Heart Project, how the partnership was so successful, and his thoughts on HPC in the cloud and what it means for the future of research. “The Stanford LHP project is simulating cardiac arrhythmia, which can be an undesirable and potentially lethal side effect of drugs.”

Hyperion Research Announces HPC Innovation Excellence Award Winners

Hyperion Research recently announced the newest recipients of the HPC Innovation Excellence Awards. “High performance computing contributes enormously to scientific progress, economic competitiveness, national security and the quality of human life,” said Bob Sorensen, Hyperion Research vice president of research and technology. “The winners of these awards have been judged to be among the world’s best at exploiting HPC to achieve important real-world innovations.”

Hyperion Innovation Excellence Award goes to UberCloud and Stanford Living Heart Project

Last week at SC17, Hyperion Research announced that the UberCloud and the Stanford Living Heart Project have won the Hyperion Award for Innovation Excellence. “The Stanford LHP project is simulating cardiac arrhythmia, which can be an undesirable and potentially lethal side effect of drugs. The electrical activity of the heart turns chaotic, decimating its pumping function, thus diminishing the circulation of blood through the body.”

Univa Grid Engine adds UberCloud Parallel MPI to Docker Containers

Today Univa announced the integration of UberCloud parallel application containers with Univa Grid Engine. In May of last year, Univa, a leading innovator of workload management products, announced the availability of Docker software container support with its Grid Engine 8.4.0 product, enabling enterprises to automatically dispatch and run jobs in Docker containers, from a user specified Docker image, on a Univa Grid Engine cluster.

Radio Free HPC Interviews Henry’s Mom and Congratulates The UberCloud on New Funding

In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team speaks to our special guest for the week: Binnie Coppersmith, also known as Henry’s Mom. It’s Binnie’s 80th birthday, and Dan wants to know once and for all if Henry is an alien, or at least why he is the way he is. After that, we look at why the UberCloud has received $1.7 Million in Pre-A Series funding. It’s great news for HPC in the Cloud.

UberCloud Obtains $1.7 Million in Pre-A Funding Round

“UberCloud has created an entire cloud computing ecosystem for complex technical simulations, leveraging cloud infrastructure providers, developing and utilizing middleware container technology, and bringing on board established and proven application software providers, all for the benefit of a growing community of engineers and scientists that need to solve critical technical problems on demand,” said Roland Manger, co-founder and Partner at Earlybird. “While technical computing has been slow to adopt the benefits of the Cloud, we are convinced that UberCloud can be a catalyst for change.”

New Site Compares Docker, Singularity, Shifter, and Univa Grid Engine Container Edition

A new site developed by Tin H compares the HPC virtualization capabilities of Docker, Singularity, Shifter, and Univa Grid Engine Container Edition. “They bring the benefits of container to the HPC world and some provide very similar features. The subtleties are in their implementation approach. MPI maybe the place with the biggest difference.”
