Video: Fighting Wildfires with AI and IBM Systems

In this video, Michele Taufer from the University of Tennessee describes how AI enabled by HPC allows researchers to study wildfire propagation which enhances predictions and mitigation. “One of the projects her team is working on looks at how to integrate aspects of soil moisture with wildfire simulations. HPC today and machine learning/AI enable us to identify those patterns and extract the knowledge. The data are generated, analyzed at the same time, and then the knowledge extracted by the data is re-injected into the simulation. Our POWER9 system that allow us exactly to do that.”

UK to establish Northern Intensive Computing Environment (NICE)

The N8 Centre of Excellence in Computationally Intensive Research, N8 CIR, has been awarded £3.1m from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Resources Council to establish a new Tier 2 computing facility in the north of England. This investment will be matched by £5.3m from the eight universities in the N8 Research Partnership which will fund operational costs and dedicated research software engineering support. “The new facility, known as the Northern Intensive Computing Environment or NICE, will be housed at Durham University and co-located with the existing STFC DiRAC Memory Intensive National Supercomputing Facility. NICE will be based on the same technology that is used in current world-leading supercomputers and will extend the capability of accelerated computing. The technology has been chosen to combine experimental, modelling and machine learning approaches and to bring these specialist communities together to address new research challenges.”

IBM Powers AiMos Supercomputer at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

The most powerful supercomputer to debut on the November 2019 Top500 ranking of supercomputers will be unveiled today at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Center for Computational Innovations (CCI). Part of a collaboration between IBM, Empire State Development (ESD), and NY CREATES, the eight petaflop IBM POWER9-equipped AI supercomputer is configured to help enable users to explore new AI applications and accelerate economic development from New York’s smallest startups to its largest enterprises.

IBM Deploys Triton AI Supercomputer at University of Miami

Today the University of Miami (UM) announced that their new Triton supercomputer is installed and helping their researchers explore new frontiers of science. The new supercomputer will be UM’s first GPU-accelerated HPC system, representing a completely new approach to computational and data science for the university’s campuses. Built using IBM Power Systems AC922 servers, the new HPC system was designed to maximize data movement between the IBM POWER9 CPU and attached accelerators like GPUs.

Video: Introducing the 125 Petaflop Sierra Supercomputer

In this video, researchers from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory describe Sierra, LLNL’s next-generation supercomputer. “The IBM-built advanced technology high-performance system is projected to provide four to six times the sustained performance and be at least seven times more powerful than LLNL’s current most advanced system, Sequoia, with a 125 petaFLOP/s peak. At approximately 11 megawatts, Sierra will also be about five times more power efficient than Sequoia.”
