Dr. Xiaoxiang Zhu wins 2018 PRACE Ada Lovelace Award for HPC

Today PRACE announced that Prof. Dr. Xiaoxiang Zhu, German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany, is the winner of the 2018 PRACE Ada Lovelace Award for HPC for her outstanding contributions and impact on HPC in Europe. “Prof Zhu and her team (SiPEO) develop explorative algorithms to improve information retrieval from remote sensing data, in particular those from the current and next generation of Earth observation missions.”

Apply Now for the Summer of HPC in Edinburgh

Applications are now open for the PRACE Summer of HPC 2018. The Summer of HPC is a PRACE outreach and training program that offers summer placements at top HPC centers across Europe to late-stage undergraduates and early-stage postgraduate students. “Consisting of a training week and two months on placement at top HPC centers around Europe, the program offers participants the opportunity to learn and share more about PRACE and HPC, and includes accommodation, a stipend and travel.”

Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars from institutions in Canada, Europe, Japan and the United States are invited to apply for the ninth International HPC Summer School on HPC Challenges in Computational Sciences in the Czech Republic July 8-13, 2018. “Hosted by the IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Centre, the summer school in Ostrava is organized by the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE), the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE), the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science (RIKEN AICS), and the SciNet HPC Consortium.”

The European Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) is expanding to make its programs and training offerings more accessible for university students and faculty members. “The Outreach to Universities program is the one-stop shop where the latest student-centric information on programs, educational opportunities and more can be found.”

A Closer Look at the D.A.V.I.D.E. Supercomputer at CINECA in Italy

In this video, researchers from CINECA in Italy describe how their new D.A.V.I.D.E. supercomputer powers science and engineering. “Developed by E4 Engineering, D.A.V.I.D.E. (Development for an Added Value Infrastructure Designed in Europe) is an Energy Aware Petaflops Class High Performance Cluster based on Power Architecture and coupled with NVIDIA Tesla Pascal GPUs with NVLink.”

Call for Workshops: European HPC Summit Week 2018

The European HPC Summit Week 2018 conference has released their Call for Workshops. The event takes place place May 28 – June 1 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. “This call for workshops is addressed to all possible participants interested in including a session or workshop in the EHPCSW18. The procedure is to send an expression of interest to have a session/workshop and agree on a joint programme for this week. If you are an HPC project, initiative or company and you want to include a workshop or session in the European HPC Summit Week, please send the document attached before December 18, 2017.”

MareNostrum Supercomputer to contribute 475 million core hours to European Research

Today the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre announced plans to allocate 475 million core hours of its supercomputer MareNostrum to 17 research projects as part of the PRACE initiative. Of all the nations participating in PRACE’s recent Call for Proposals, Spain is now the leading contributor of compute hours to European research.

PRACE Awards 1.7 Thousand Million Core Hours for Research Projects in Europe

Today the European PRACE initiative announced that 46 Awards from their recent 15th Call for Proposals total up to nearly 1.7 thousand million core hours. The 46 awarded projects are led by principal investigators from 12 different European countries. “Of local interest this time around, the awarded projects involve co-investigators from the USA (7) and Russia (2). All information and the abstracts of the projects awarded under the 15th PRACE Call for Proposals are now available online.”
