Women in HPC Celebration comes to Salt Lake City on Nov. 15

The Women in HPC network is hosting a meetup celebration at SC16. The event will take place at Nov. 15 at 7:30pm – 9:00pm at Caffé Molise in Salt Lake City. “Join us to celebrate the growing community of women in the supercomputing community and the work of WHPC. This special networking evening will include drinks and an appetizer buffet. Hosted by EPCC in collaboration with Intel, Compute Canada and McMahon Consulting, the event is a great opportunity to celebrate the work done by WHPC and meet members, founders, advocates and supporters.”

“Improving diversity at conferences should be high up on the agenda for everyone. It is generally accepted that diversity in the workforce is a good thing: improving the representation of women in teams improves the overall performance of the teams, seeing women in positions that were traditionally male dominated helps to overcome the negative stereotypes that women are not suited to these roles as well as providing visible role models for future generations.”

“This workshop aims to recognize and discuss the challenges faced by women, one of many underrepresented groups that exist in HPC, as well as opportunities for broadening participation in HPC fields and activities to encourage women to enter the field with consideration of differing legislation affecting hiring and employment practices among the different countries. A keynote address and panel discussion will focus on strategies implemented by employers to diversify the HPC workforce and discuss the efficacy of the approaches.”

To learn more, we caught up with WHPC Director Dr. Toni Collis from EPCC at the University of Edinburgh. “Most people don’t notice how un-diverse HPC really is. But when you start counting the number of women in the room, at the table, or in the C-suite, it is quite surprising.”

Compute Canada Joins Women in HPC Network

Compute Canada has become the first international partner to join the Women in High Performance Computing (WHPC) network. “Achieving gender balance in advanced research computing is an important goal for Compute Canada,” said Mark Dietrich, President and Chief Executive Officer Compute Canada. “This is not just an important equality and balance issue. We know achieving gender balance, and diversity in general, improves innovation and research outputs. In order to meet the growing demand for HPC skillsets that address the increasing requirements of key industrial and academic sectors we must support and grow our skill base in this area.”
