Intersect360: HPC Industry Down 3.7% Due to COVID-19, First Decline in a Decade

Industry analyst firm Intersect360 has announced its forecast for the HPC industry for this year and next, predicting a 3.7 percent decline for 2020 with a market rebound in 2021. Pegging the size of the industry at $39 billion in 2019, a jump of 8.2 percent from 2018, the firm predicted “significant disruption” to the HPC market in the short term as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic followed by a corresponding spike upward in 2021.

Video: HPC and AI Market Update from Intersect360 Research

Addison Snell from Intersect360 Research gave this talk at the Stanford HPC Conference. “As the global shutdown continues, inquiring minds want to know what the effects will be on the HPC and AI market. Intersect360 Research has released a new report guiding its clients that the market for HPC products and services will fall significantly short of its previous 2020 forecast, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The newly-revised forecast predicts the overall worldwide HPC market will be flat to down 12% in 2020.”

Intersect360 Research Lowers 2020 HPC Market Forecast for COVID-19

Intersect360 Research has released a new report guiding its clients that the market for HPC products and services will fall significantly short of its previous 2020 forecast, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The newly-revised forecast predicts the overall worldwide HPC market will be flat to down 12% in 2020. “Intersect360 Research had previously forecast the HPC market would grow 7.0% in 2020, year-over-year from 2019. This projected shortfall essentially wipes out that growth. This would end a streak of ten straight growth years for the HPC market.”

Intersect360 Research Examines Spending Trends in Machine Learning Market

Intersect360 Research has released a pair of new reports examining major technology trends in AI and machine learning, including the worldwide market, spending trends, and impact on HPC. “Machine learning has been in a very high growth stage,” says Intersect360 Research CEO Addison Snell. “In addition to that $10 billion, many systems not one hundred percent dedicated to machine learning are serving training needs as part of their total workloads, increasing the influence that machine learning has on spending and configuration.”

Intersect360 Research to Discuss Hyperscale Trends at Stanford HPC Conference

There is still significant influence between HPC and hyperscale, in both directions, most notably in the areas of cognitive computing and artificial intelligence, where research at some of the top hyperscale companies leads the field. Standards like Open Compute Project, OpenStack, and Beiji/Scorpio also can drive acquisition decisions at traditional HPC-using organizations. Big data and analytics also transcend both HPC and hyperscale, driving I/O scalability in both markets. These trends are all included in the new hyperscale advisory service from Intersect360 Research.
