Video: Introduction to PASC18 Paper Track

PASC18 is soliciting high-quality original research papers related to scientific computing in any of the eight scientific domains represented at the conference (chemistry and materials, life sciences, physics, climate and weather, solid earth dynamics, engineering, computer science and applied mathematics, and emerging application domains). Papers that address aspects emphasizing the close coupling of data and computation in current and future high performance computing applications – as indicated by the theme of PASC18: Fast and Big Data, Fast and Big Computation – are particularly welcome.

Researchers in Machine Learning Awarded George Michael Memorial HPC Fellowships

Today ACM and IEEE announced that Shaden Smith of the University of Minnesota and Yang You of the University of California, Berkeley are the recipients of the 2017 ACM/IEEE-CS George Michael Memorial HPC Fellowships. Smith is being recognized for his work on efficient and parallel large-scale sparse tensor factorization for machine learning applications. You is being recognized for his work on designing accurate, fast, and scalable machine learning algorithms on distributed systems.

Kathy Yelick to Keynote ACM Europe Conference

Kathy Yelick from LBNL will give the HPC keynote on Exascale computing at the upcoming ACM Europe Conference. With main themes centering on Cybersecurity and High Performance Computing, the event takes place Sept. 7-8 in Barcelona.

The PASC17 Conference has issued its Call for Submissions. Co-sponsored by ACM and SIGHPC, the event will take place June 26-28, 2017 in Lugano, Switzerland. “The PASC Conference is an interdisciplinary event in high performance computing that brings together domain science, applied mathematics and computer science – where computer science is focused on enabling the realization of scientific computation.”

ACM Elects First All-Female Leadership Team

Today the ACM Association for Computing Machinery announced the election of new officers who will lead the organization for a two-year term beginning July 1. Heading the new team will be incoming President Vicki L. Hanson. Hanson is a Distinguished Professor of Computing at Rochester Institute of Technology, and Professor and Chair of Inclusive Technologies at University of Dundee. Joining Hanson as Vice President will be Cherri M. Pancake, Professor Emeritus and Intel Faculty Fellow in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University; and, as Secretary/Treasurer, Elizabeth Churchill, Director of User Experience at Google.

ACM Awards 2016 Gödel Prize to Inventors of Concurrent Separation Logic

Today the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Algorithms and Computation Theory (SIGACT) and the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS) announced that Stephen Brookes and Peter W. O’Hearn are the recipients of the 2016 Gödel Prize for their invention of Concurrent Separation Logic.

Ron Perrott to Receive ACM Distinguished Service Award

Today ACM announced that Ron Perrott, an international leader in the development and promotion of parallel computing, will receive ACM’s prestigious Distinguished Service Award. The goal of ACM’s Awards and Recognition Program is to highlight outstanding technical and professional achievements and contributions in computer science and IT. Perrott will be formally honored at the ACM Awards Banquet on June 11 in San Francisco.
