Fending off Bitcoin Mining HPC Thieves – Idaho National Lab’s Cryptojacking Detector

Demand for HPC resources from cryptocurrency miners has only increased with the explosion in the Bitcoin’s price – up 65 percent year-to-date. But with that demand has come mining malware, such as Monero and Lighting, algorithms that embed themselves into HPC applications. Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has announced development of a machine translation-based cryptocurrency mining […]

Sawtooth Supercomputer from HPE Comes to Idaho National Lab

A powerful new supercomputer arrived this week at Idaho National Laboratory’s Collaborative Computing Center. The machine has the power to run complex modeling and simulation applications, which are essential to developing next-generation nuclear technologies. “Named after a central Idaho mountain range, Sawtooth arrives in December and will be available to users early next year. The $19.2 million system ranks #37 on the 2019 Top500 fastest supercomputers in the world. That is the highest ranking reached by an INL supercomputer. Of 102 new systems added to the list in the past six months, only three were faster than Sawtooth.”

Epic 2018 HPC Road Trip begins at Idaho National Lab

In this special guest feature, Dan Olds from OrionX begins his Epic HPC Road Trip series with a stop at Idaho National Laboratory. “The fast approach of SC18 gave me an idea: why not drive from my home base in Beaverton, Oregon, to Dallas, Texas and stop at national labs along the way? I love a good road trip and what could be better than a 5,879 mile drive with visits to supercomputer users mixed in?”
