AMD Donates HPC Systems to fight COVID-19

AMD has announced a COVID-19 HPC fund to provide research institutions with computing resources to accelerate medical research on COVID-19 and other diseases. The fund will include an initial donation of $15 million of high-performance systems powered by AMD EPYC CPUs and AMD Radeon Instinct GPUs to key research institutions. “I’m also proud that AMD last week joined the COVID-19 High Performance Computing Consortium,” writes AMD CEO Lisa Su.

AMD Powers Azure HBv2 Virtual Machines for HPC Workloads

The AMD and Microsoft partnership continues to expand this week with the launch of Microsoft Azure NVv4 Virtual Machines. Powered by 2nd Gen AMD EPYC  Processors and AMD Radeon Instinct GPUs, the powerful new VMs are now generally available to customers in South Central US, East US, and West Europe regions, with additional regions planned for the coming months. “These VMs, the first in the industry to be powered by both AMD EPYC CPUs and Radeon Instinct GPUs, enable customers to scale virtual desktops in the cloud that support a variety of workloads.”

Penguin Computing Upgrades Corona Cluster with 7nm AMD GPU Technology

Penguin Computing has upgraded the Corona supercomputer at LLNL with the newest AMD Radeon Instinct MI60 accelerators. Based on the Vega 7nm architecture, this upgrade is the latest example of Penguin Computing and LLNL’s ongoing collaboration aimed at providing additional capabilities to the LLNL user community. “With the MI60 upgrade, the cluster increases its potential PFLOPS peak performance to 9.45 petaFLOPS of FP32 peak performance. This brings significantly greater performance and AI capabilities to the research communities.”

Today at SC19, AMD announced a set of new customer wins and new platforms supporting AMD EPYC processors and Radeon Instinct accelerators, as well as the release of ROCm 3.0 development environment. “HPC organizations are continuing to adopt the 2nd Gen AMD EPYC processor and Radeon Instinct accelerators for more powerful and efficient supercomputing systems. The 2nd Gen EPYC processors provide twice the manufacturing application performance and up to 60% faster Life Sciences simulations than competing solutions, while the Radeon Instinct GPU accelerator provides up to 6.6 peak theoretical TFLOPS Double Precision performance for HPC workloads.”
