Today Fujitsu announced that it has received an order for a supercomputer system from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Powered by the Arm-based A64FX processor, the system will contribute in improving the international competitiveness of aerospace research, as it will be widely used as the basis for JAXA’s high performance computing. “Scheduled to start operation in October 2020, the new computing system for large-scale numerical simulation, composed of Fujitsu Supercomputer PRIMEHPC FX1000, is expected to have a theoretical computational performance of 19.4 petaflops, which is approximately 5.5 times that of the current system.”
Fugaku Supercomputer joins fight against COVID-19
Today RIKEN in Japan announced that the partially finished Fugaku supercomputer will be made available for research projects aimed to combat COVID-19. The installation of the new supercomputer began in December 2019, and it is scheduled to go into full-fledged open use in 2021. “To combat the global pandemic of the COVID-19 virus, we will rapidly provide access to the capabilities of Fugaku, leapfrogging its preparation, to accelerate the scientific process of diagnosis, treatment, as well as general prevention of infection spread, to contribute to the early termination of the pandemic.”

Today Fujitsu announced that a prototype of the Fugaku supercomputer being jointly developed by the two parties took No.1 in the Green500, a global ranking based on the energy efficiency of supercomputers. With Fugaku, we succeeded in developing a general-purpose Arm CPU with the world’s highest energy efficiency, far exceeding our targets through Co-design,” said Satoshi Matsuoka, Director, Riken-Center for Computational Science (R-CCS).

Today Cray and Fujitsu announced a partnership to offer high performance technologies for the exascale era. Under the alliance agreement, Cray is developing the first-ever commercial supercomputer powered by the Fujitsu A64FX Arm-based processor with high-memory bandwidth (HBM) and supported on the proven Cray CS500 supercomputer architecture and programming environment.
