Sandia Selects SoftIron File and Object Storage for Stria Cluster

Sandia National Laboratories Vanguard program has selected SoftIron, Ltd., to provide supplemental file and object storage for Sandia’s ARM-based Stria high performance computing cluster.

Stria supports the petascale Astra supercomputer – which Sandia said is the fastest ARM-based system on the TOP500 listing of the world’s most powerful computers – as a development system for preparing software releases and codes to be used on Astra.

NNSA Explorations: ARM for Supercomputing

Howard Pritchard from LANL and Simon Hammond from Sandia gave this talk at the Argonne Training Program on Extreme-Scale Computing 2019. “Sandia National Laboratories has been an active partner in leveraging our Arm-based platform since its early design, and featuring it in the deployment of the world’s largest Arm-based supercomputer, is a strategic investment for the DOE and the industry as a whole as we race toward achieving exascale computing.”

An Update on ARM in HPC

Brent Gorda from Arm gave this talk at the Linaro Connect conference. “Arm-based systems are showing up in the HPC community and new silicon is coming. The architecture has also been selected for several of the exascale projects worldwide. Brent will talk about the aspects of Arm that are attractive to the HPC community, updates on projects and what we as a community can do to help accelerate adoption in this space.”

Video: Arm HPC Update from ISC 2019

In this video, Brent Gorda provides an update on the progress on Arm HPC from the ISC 2019 conference in Frankfurt. “From the perspective of Arm in HPC, it was an excellent event with several high-profile announcements that caught everyone’s attention. The Arm ecosystem was well represented with our partners visible on the show floor and around town.”

ASTRA: A Large Scale ARM64 HPC Deployment

Michael Aguilar from Sandia National Laboratories gave this talk at the Stanford HPC Conference. “This talk will discuss the Sandia National Laboratories Astra HPC system as mechanism for developing and evaluating large-scale deployments of alternative and advanced computational architectures. As part of the Vanguard program, the new Arm-based system will be used by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to run advanced modeling and simulation workloads for addressing areas such as national security, energy and science.”

Interview: Brent Gorda on his New Role as Head of ARM HPC

Former Whamcloud CEO Brent Gorda has a new role as Senior Director for the HPC business at Arm. We caught up with Brent to learn more about the company’s plans to grow their business in the Datacenter, HPC space, and on to Exascale. “Arm partners ship over 20 billion cores a year(!) and our company is well-known for being the core IP in many designs at the edge. The trend toward the datacenter with Arm is clear, it’s an opportunity for the HPC market to take advantage of the considerable boost in performance via SVE and the Arm roadmap.”

ARM goes Big: HPE Builds Petaflop Supercomputer for Sandia

Today HPE announced plans to deliver the world’s largest Arm supercomputer. As part of the Vanguard program, Astra, the new Arm-based system, will be used by the NNSA to run advanced modeling and simulation workloads for addressing areas such as national security, energy and science. “By introducing Arm processors with the HPE Apollo 70, a purpose-built HPC architecture, we are bringing powerful elements, like optimal memory performance and greater density, to supercomputers that existing technologies in the market cannot match,” said Mike Vildibill, vice president, Advanced Technologies Group, HPE.
