SDSC Conducts 50,000+ GPU Cloudburst Experiment with Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center
In all, some 51,500 GPU processors were used during the approximately two-hour experiment conducted on November 16 and funded under a National Science Foundation EAGER grant. The experiment used simulations from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, an array of some 5,160 optical sensors deep within a cubic kilometer of ice at the South Pole. In 2017, researchers at the NSF-funded observatory found the first evidence of a source of high-energy cosmic neutrinos – subatomic particles that can emerge from their sources and pass through the universe unscathed, traveling for billions of light years to Earth from some of the most extreme environments in the universe.
ETH Zurich up for Best Paper at SC19 with Lossy Compression for Large Graphs
A team of researchers at ETH Zurich are working on a novel approach to solving increasingly large graph problems. “As the size of graph datasets grows larger, a question arises: Does one need to store and process the exact input graph datasets to ensure precise outcomes of important graph algorithms? After an extensive investigation into this question, the ETH researchers have been nominated for the Best Paper and Best Student Paper Awards at SC19.”
MLPerf Releases Over 500 Inference Benchmarks
Today the MLPerf consortium released over 500 inference benchmark results from 14 organizations. “Having independent benchmarks help customers understand and evaluate hardware products in a comparable light. MLPerf is helping drive transparency and oversight into machine learning performance that will enable vendors to mature and build out the AI ecosystem. Report: Mellanox ConnectX Ethernet NICs Outperforming Competition
Today Mellanox announced that laboratory tests by The Tolly Group prove its ConnectX 25GE Ethernet adapter significantly outperforms the Broadcom NetXtreme E series adapter in terms of performance, scalability and efficiency. “Our testing shows that with RoCE, storage traffic, and DPDK, the Mellanox NIC outperformed the Broadcom NIC in throughput and efficient CPU utilization. ConnectX-5 also used ‘Zero-Touch RoCE’ to deliver high throughput even with partial and no congestion control, two scenarios where Broadcom declined to be tested.”
