Inspur Re-Elected as Member of SPEC OSSC and Chair of SPEC Machine Learning

The Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) has finalized the election of new Open System Steering Committee (OSSC) executive members, which include Inspur, Intel, AMD, IBM, Oracle and three other companies. “It is worth noting that Inspur, a re-elected OSSC member, was also re-elected as the chair of the SPEC Machine Learning (SPEC ML) working group. The development plan of ML test benchmark proposed by Inspur has been approved by members which aims to provide users with standard on evaluating machine learning computing performance.”

Isambard 2 at UK Met Office to be largest Arm supercomputer in Europe

The  UK Met Office  been awarded £4.1m by EPSRC to create Isambard 2, the largest Arm-based supercomputer in Europe. The powerful new £6.5m facility, to be hosted by the Met Office in Exeter and utilized by the universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter, will double the size of GW4 Isambard, to 21,504 high performance cores and 336 nodes. “Isambard 2 will incorporate the latest novel technologies from HPE and new partner Fujitsu, including next-generation Arm CPUs in one of the world’s first A64fx machines from Cray.”

Innoviz to Accelerate AI for Autonomous Vehicles with WekaIO

Today WekaIO announced that Innoviz, a leading manufacturer of high-performance, solid-state Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors and Perception Software that enables the mass-production of autonomous vehicles, has selected the Weka File System (WekaFS) to accelerate its Artificial Intelligence (AI) and deep learning workflows. WekaFS has been chosen by Innoviz to improve application performance at scale and deliver high bandwidth I/O to its GPU cluster.

SDSC Conducts 50,000+ GPU Cloudburst Experiment with Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center

In all, some 51,500 GPU processors were used during the approximately two-hour experiment conducted on November 16 and funded under a National Science Foundation EAGER grant. The experiment used simulations from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, an array of some 5,160 optical sensors deep within a cubic kilometer of ice at the South Pole. In 2017, researchers at the NSF-funded observatory found the first evidence of a source of high-energy cosmic neutrinos – subatomic particles that can emerge from their sources and pass through the universe unscathed, traveling for billions of light years to Earth from some of the most extreme environments in the universe.

ETH Zurich up for Best Paper at SC19 with Lossy Compression for Large Graphs

A team of researchers at ETH Zurich are working on a novel approach to solving increasingly large graph problems. “As the size of graph datasets grows larger, a question arises: Does one need to store and process the exact input graph datasets to ensure precise outcomes of important graph algorithms? After an extensive investigation into this question, the ETH researchers have been nominated for the Best Paper and Best Student Paper Awards at SC19.”

MLPerf Releases Over 500 Inference Benchmarks

Today the MLPerf consortium released over 500 inference benchmark results from 14 organizations. “Having independent benchmarks help customers understand and evaluate hardware products in a comparable light. MLPerf is helping drive transparency and oversight into machine learning performance that will enable vendors to mature and build out the AI ecosystem. Intel is excited to be part of the MLPerf effort to realize the vision of AI Everywhere,” stated Dr Naveen Rao, Corp VP Intel, GM AI Products.

Podcast: RISC-V CEO Sees Bright Global Future for Open Source CPUs

In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team catches up with Calista Redmond, CEO of RISC-V. “RISC-V can be used for light weight tasks such as embedded processing but, on the other hand, is also going to be utilized as the system accelerator for the European Exascale initiative boxes. That’s some serious flexibility.”

Report: Mellanox ConnectX Ethernet NICs Outperforming Competition

Today Mellanox announced that laboratory tests by The Tolly Group prove its ConnectX 25GE Ethernet adapter significantly outperforms the Broadcom NetXtreme E series adapter in terms of performance, scalability and efficiency. “Our testing shows that with RoCE, storage traffic, and DPDK, the Mellanox NIC outperformed the Broadcom NIC in throughput and efficient CPU utilization. ConnectX-5 also used ‘Zero-Touch RoCE’ to deliver high throughput even with partial and no congestion control, two scenarios where Broadcom declined to be tested.”
