Increase in Wattage Trends Make Versatile Liquid Cooling the New Norm

Wattages are rising so high that to cool the nodes containing the highest performance chips used in HPC leaves one with little choice other than liquid cooling to maintain reasonable rack densities. Asetek explores how an increase in wattage trends is pushing the HPC industry toward more versatile liquid cooling options.

Video: Previewing the ISC 2017 Student Cluster Competition

“In a real-time challenge, 12 teams of six undergraduate students will build a small cluster of their own design on the ISC exhibit floor and race to demonstrate the greatest performance across a series of benchmarks and applications. The students will have a unique opportunity to learn, experience and demonstrate how high-performance computing influence our world and day-to-day learning.”

ISC 2017 Workshop Preview: Optimizing Linux Containers for HPC & Big Data Workloads

Christian Kniep is hosting a half-day Linux Container Workshop on Optimizing IT Infrastructure and High-Performance Workloads on June 23 in Frankfurt. “Docker as the dominant flavor of Linux Container continues to gain momentum within datacenter all over the world. It is able to benefit legacy infrastructure by leveraging the lower overhead compared to traditional, hypervisor-based virtualization. But there is more to Linux Containers – and Docker in particular, which this workshop will explore.”

Agenda Posted for HP-CAST at ISC 2017

Hewlett Packard Enterprise has posted their Preliminary Agenda for HP-CAST. As HPE’s user group meeting for high performance computing, the event takes place June 16-17 in Frankfurt, just prior to ISC 2017. “The High Performance Consortium for Advanced Scientific and Technical (HP-CAST) computing users group works to increase the capabilities of Hewlett Packard Enterprise solutions for large-scale, scientific and technical computing. HP-CAST provides guidance to Hewlett Packard Enterprise on the essential development and support issues for such systems. HP-CAST meetings typically include corporate briefings and presentations by HPE executives and technical staff (under NDA), and discussions of customer issues related to high-performance technical computing.”

STEM: Keeping the Interest

In this special guest feature, Kim McMahon writes that helping get young people interested in STEM is the job of every HPC professional. “The ISC High Performance Conference is taking charge and educating with the establishment of a STEM Student Day at the ISC High Performance conference in Frankfurt in June. The program is new this year, and aims to bring together STEM students and HPC Community, show students the technical skills that will help them in their careers, and introduce students to the various jobs in the STEM field.”
