Energy Efficiency Comparison: Air-Cooling vs Liquid Cooling

In this sponsored article, David Craig, CEO of Iceotope, discusses how a paradigm shift, from air to liquid cooling has become the favoured solution – already the standard for high performance computing (HPC). The discussion for all workloads has moved on from whether to stick with traditional air-cooling systems to one of how to practically evolve to precision immersion liquid-cooling.

Holistic Data Centre Design and Operation – Considerations for HPC

From data centre infrastructure efficiency (DCIE) to power usage effectiveness (PUE) there are many considerations for data centre providers that impact the cost to build, operate and scale a facility. However, while many strive to become more effective, efficient and environmentally responsible, not all providers look holistically at optimising data centre lifecycle end-to-end. To achieve optimum performance, providers must embark on a journey from design and construction through to deployment, operation and optimisation, leveraging emulation, automation and analytics to ensure their customers’ needs are met. This is particularly crucial for operators seeking to harness high performance computing (HPC) to cope with a rapidly growing influx of data.

Continuing Arecibo’s Legacy – A Partnership to Save Telescope Data at TACC

Millions of people have seen footage of the famed Arecibo radio telescope’s collapse – due to various hurricanes and other natural disasters – in December 2020. What they would not have seen from those videos was Arecibo’s data center, located outside the danger zone. It stores the “golden copy” of the telescope’s data — the original tapes, hard drives, and disk drives of sky scans since the 1960s. Now, a new partnership will make sure that about 3PB of telescope data is securely backed up off-site and made accessible to astronomers….

CINECA Partners with Atos for 240PFLOPS ‘Leonardo’ Supercomputer

The CINECA supercomputing center in Bologna, Italy, has selected Atos’ BullSequana XH2000 supercomputing platform integrated with ParTec’s ParaStation Modulo software for its new 240 petaFLOPS HPC system, “Leonardo.” Featuring Atos’ DLC (Direct Liquid Cooling) technology using warm water up to 40°C, the platform is designed for energy efficiency. Scheduled for installation at the end of 2021 in the new […]
