Stepping up Efficiency for Exascale with FPGAs at the LEGaTO Project

In this special guest feature from Scientific Computing World, Robert Roe writes that European researchers have developed a framework to boost the energy efficiency of CPU, GPU and FPGA resources. “Legato (Low Energy Toolset for Heterogeneous Computing) is one such project with the lofty aims of developing a programming framework to support heterogeneous systems of CPU, GPU and FPGA resources that can offload specific tasks to different acceleration technologies through its own runtime system.”

Video: FPGAs and Machine Learning

James Moawad and Greg Nash from Intel gave this talk at ATPESC 2019. “FPGAs are a natural choice for implementing neural networks as they can handle different algorithms in computing, logic, and memory resources in the same device. Faster performance comparing to competitive implementations as the user can hardcore operations into the hardware. Software developers can use the OpenCL device C level programming standard to target FPGAs as accelerators to standard CPUs without having to deal with hardware level design.”

New Achronix Bittware FPGA Accelerator Speeds Cloud, AI, and Machine Learning

In October Bittware and Achronix announced a strategic collaboration with Achronix to introduce the S7t-VG6 PCIe accelerator product – a PCIe card sporting the new Achronix 7nm Speedster7t FPGA. This new generation of accelerator products offers a range of capabilities including low-cost and highly flexible GDDR6 memory that aims to offer HBM-class memory bandwidth, high-performance machine learning processors and a new 2D network-on-chip for high bandwidth and energy-efficient data movement.

Aldec’s new FPGA-based NVMe Data Storage Targets HPC Applications

Today Aldec, Inc. launched a powerful, versatile and time-saving FPGA-based NVMe Data Storage solution to aid in the development of High Performance Computing applications such as High Frequency Trading and Machine Learning. “NVMe SSDs are very popular in a wide range of high-performance computing applications, as are FPGAs because of their ability to handle parallel processing, their speed and programmability, plus the fact MPSoC FPGAs also feature ARM processor cores,” comments Louie De Luna, Director of Marketing. “Our newest FPGA-based embedded solution is aimed at engineers developing systems that will combine the power and benefits of NVMe and FPGAs.”

Developed in cooperation with Achronix Semiconductor Corporation, this next generation product offers a range of breakthrough capabilities including low-cost and highly flexible GDDR6 memories that offer HBM-class memory bandwidth, high-performance machine learning processors and a revolutionary 2D network-on-chip for high bandwidth and energy-efficient data movement.

GigaIO Optimizes Scalability of Xilinx Alveo FPGAs

Today GigaIO introduced FabreX support for Xilinx Alveo Accelerators, in addition to an exclusive offering that provides Xilinx FPGA developers with remote cloud access to the FabreX platform. In conjunction with the Xilinx Alveo family of adaptable accelerator cards, Xilinx developers will use FabreX to enhance proof of concept, software testing, and scale-out deployments in applications like artificial intelligence, deep learning inference, and high-performance computing.

Vitis Unified Software Platform to make FPGA Programming Accessible for All Developers

Since their beginnings, FPGA’s have been notorious for being hard to program. That could be changing with the new Vitis Unified Software Platform from Xilinx.n“Xilinx has created a singular environment that enables programmers and engineers from all disciplines to co-develop and optimize both their hardware and software, using the tools and frameworks they already know and understand. This means that they can adapt their hardware architecture to their application without the need for new silicon.”

Intel Ships Stratix 10 DX FPGAs

Intel today announced shipments of new Intel Stratix 10 DX field programmable gate arrays (FPGA). “Stratix 10 DX FPGAs with the new interfaces include the option to support select Intel Optane DC persistent memory dual in-line memory modules (DIMMs). They dramatically increase bandwidth and provide coherent memory expansion and hardware acceleration for upcoming select Intel Xeon Scalable processors.”

Intel Ships First 10nm Agilex FPGAs with Integrated Arm Processors

Today Intel announced that it has begun shipments of the first Intel Agilex field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) to early access program customers. In what may be a surprise to many, the F-Series variant of the chip family also provides the option to integrate a quad-core Arm Cortex-A53 processor to provide high system integration. “Intel FPGAs have provided Microsoft tremendous value for accelerating real-time AI, networking, and other applications/infrastructure across Azure Cloud Services, Bing, and other data center services.”
