TACC’s Lonestar 5 Begins Full Production

Today the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) announced that the Lonestar 5 supercomputer is in full production and is ready to contribute to advancing science across the state of Texas. Managed by TACC, the center’s second petaflop system is primed to be a leading computing resource for the engineering and science research community. “An analysis of strong-scaling on Lonestar 5 shows gains over other comparable resources,” said Scott Waibel, a graduate student in the Department of Geological Sciences at Portland State University. “Lonestar 5 provides the perfect high performance computing resource for our efforts.”

With APEX, National Labs Collaborate to Develop Next-Gen Supercomputers

Today Los Alamos, Lawrence Berkeley, and Sandia national laboratories announced the Alliance for Application Performance at Extreme Scale (APEX). The new collaboration will focus on the design, acquisition and deployment of future advanced technology high performance computing systems.

Cray, AMPLab, NERSC Collaborate on Spark Performance for HPC Platforms

Today NERSC announced a collaboration with UC Berkeley’s AMPLab and Cray to design large-scale data analytics stacks. “Analytics workloads will be an increasingly important workload on our supercomputers and we are thrilled to support and participate in this key collaboration,” said Ryan Waite, senior vice president of products at Cray. “As Cray’s supercomputing platforms enable researchers and scientists to model reality ever more accurately using high-fidelity simulations, we have long seen the need for scalable, performant analytic tools to interpret the resulting data. The Berkeley Data Analytics Stack (BDAS) and Spark, in particular, are emerging as a de facto foundation of such a toolset because of their combined focus on productivity and scalable performance.”

Army Unveils Excalibur Cray XC40 Supercomputer

On Oct. 16, the U.S. Army introduced Excalibur, its newest supercomputer. Currently ranked at #26 on the TOP500, the Cray XC40 system will help ensure Soldiers have the technological advantage on the battlefield, officials said.

With Hazel Hen Cray XC40, HRLS Upgrades to 7.42 Petaflops

HLRS in Stuttgart, Germany has upgraded their Hornet system to Hazel Hen, a 7.42 Petaflop Cray XC40 supercomputer. Twice as fast as its predecessor, Hazel Hen is now now ready to support European scientific and industrial users in their pursuit of R&D break-throughs. “In case you’re wondering, HRLS chose the name Hazel Hen because it’s the one animal that eats Hornets.”

Danish Meteorological to Install First Cray in Iceland

Today Cray announced that the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has purchased a Cray XC supercomputer and a Cray Sonexion 2000 storage system. Through an arrangement with the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO), the system will be installed at the IMO datacenter in Reykjavik, Iceland for year-round power and cooling efficiency.

Cray XC40 Coming to Bureau of Meteorology in Australia

Today Cray announced the Bureau of Meteorology in Australia has awarded the Company a contract worth up to $53 million to provide a Cray XC40 supercomputer and a Cray Sonexion 2000 storage system. This further strengthens Cray’s leadership position in the global operational weather and climate community, as an increasing number of the world’s leading centers rely on Cray supercomputers to run their complex meteorological and mission critical models.

David Keyes and Jen Frechet on how Shaheen II Supercomputer will Drive Research

In this video, Professors Jean Frechet and David Keyes describe their vision for KAUST’s new Shaheen II Cray XC40 supercomputer. “​The initial configuration of Shaheen II will feature nearly 200,000 x86 processor cores. At initial delivery, anticipated in March 2015, Shaheen II will deliver over 5 petaflops of peak performance, with 17.6 petabytes of Sonexion Lustre storage and greater than 790 terabytes of memory.”
