HudsonAlpha to host BioTech Hackathon in Huntsville

The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology will host the second HudsonAlpha Tech Challenge February 22-24, 2019. This life sciences hackathon brings together students and professionals who attempt to solve challenges using an emerging technology, and apply it to biotech and the life sciences. “The HudsonAlpha Tech Challenge is a great opportunity to introduce genomics, genetics and biotech to existing and emerging leaders in computer science and technology,” said Adam Hott, EdD, digital applications lead at HudsonAlpha.”

Researchers Tune HPC Codes for Intel Xeon Phi at Brookhaven Hackathon

“The goal of this hands-on workshop was to help participants optimize their application codes to exploit the different levels of parallelism and memory hierarchies in the Xeon Phi architecture,” said CSI computational scientist Meifeng Lin. “By the end of the hackathon, the participants had not only made their codes run more efficiently on Xeon Phi–based systems, but also learned about strategies that could be applied to other CPU-based systems to improve code performance.”

NERSC to Host Data Day on August 22

Today NERSC announced plans to host a new, data-centric event called Data Day. The main event will take place on August 22, followed by a half-day hackathon on August 23. The goal: to bring together researchers who use, or are interested in using, NERSC systems for data-intensive work.

Podcast: TACC Powers Zika Hackathon to Fight Disease

In this TACC podcast, Ari Kahn from the Texas Advanced Computing Center and Eddie Garcia from Cloudera describe a recent Hackathon in Austin designed to tackle data challenges in the fight against the Zika virus. The Texas Advanced Computing Center provided time on the Wrangler data intensive supercomputer as a virtual workspace for the Zika hackers.

2016 Hackathons Seeking Team Applications

“The goal of each hackathon is for current or prospective user groups of large hybrid CPU-GPU systems to send teams of at least 3 developers along with either (1) a (potentially) scalable application that needs to be ported to GPU accelerators, or (2) an application running on accelerators which needs optimization. There will be intensive mentoring during this 5-day hands-on workshop, with the goal that the teams leave with applications running on GPUs, or at least with a clear roadmap of how to get there. Our mentors come from national laboratories, universities and vendors, and besides having extensive experience in programming with OpenACC/CUDA, many of them develop the GPU-capable compilers and help define the OpenACC standard.”
