Podcast: Intel Omni-Path Rocks the TOP500

In this podcast from ISC 2017 in Frankfurt, the Radio Free HPC team sits down with Scott Misage from Intel to learn why Intel Omni-Path has gained momentum on the TOP500. “Intel Omni-Path Architecture delivers the performance for tomorrow’s high performance computing workloads and the ability to scale to tens of thousands of nodes—and eventually more—at a price competitive with today’s fabrics. The Intel OPA 100 Series product line is an end-to-end solution of PCIe* adapters, silicon, switches, cables, and management software. As the successor to Intel® True Scale Fabric, this optimized HPC fabric is built upon a combination of enhanced IP and Intel technology.”

Slidecast: Intel Omni-Path Architecture – A World Class High Performance Interconnect

In this slidecast, Scott Misage from Intel is our guest on the Rich Report. As the General Manager of the Intel Omni-Path Business Unit, Scott has a lot to say about scalability, performance, and market momentum for this powerful interconnect technology. He also provides a preview of ISC 2017, where Intel Omni-Path will be in the spotlight as a rising star on the TOP500.

Video: 5 Petaflop Booster System from Dell EMC coming to Jülich

In this video from the Dell EMC HPC Community meeting in Austin, Thomas Lippert from the Jülich Supercomputing Centre describes their pending 5 Petaflop Booster system. “This will be the first-ever demonstration in a production environment of the Cluster-Booster concept, pioneered in DEEP and DEEP-ER at prototype-level, and a considerable step towards the implementation of JSC’s modular supercomputing concept,” explains Prof. Thomas Lippert, Director of the Jülich Supercomputing Centre.

PSSC Labs Launches Eco Blades for HPC

The Eco Blade is a unique server platform engineered specifically for high performance, high density computing environments – simultaneously increasing compute density while decreasing power use. Eco Blade offers two complete, independent servers within 1U of rack space. Each independent server supports up to 64 Intel Xeon processor cores and 1.0 TB of enterprise memory for a total of up to 128 Cores and 2 TB of memory per 1U.

Jülich to Build 5 Petaflop Supercomputing Booster with Dell

Today Intel and the Jülich Supercomputing Centre together with ParTec and Dell today announced plans to develop and deploy a next-generation modular supercomputing system. Leveraging the experience and results gained in the EU-funded DEEP and DEEP-ER projects, in which three of the partners have been strongly engaged, the group will develop the necessary mechanisms required to augment JSC’s JURECA cluster with a highly-scalable component named “Booster” and being based on Intel’s Scalable Systems Framework (Intel SSF).

PBS Works will Power New Supercomputer at BASF

Over at the Altair Blog, Jochen Krebs writes that the new HPC cluster at BASF will run PBS Works workload management software. “What does it take to go from months to mere days in gaining results when conducting research? Supercomputing now plays a vital role in the advancement of systems efficiency across industries. On March 17th, BASF and HPE announced in a press release that BASF has chosen HPE to build a new supercomputer for chemical research projects. HPE’s Apollo System supercomputer will help BASF to reduce computer simulation and modeling times from months to days and will drive the digitalization of BASF’s worldwide research activities.”

High Performance Interconnects – Assessments, Rankings and Landscape

Dan Olds from OrionX.net presented this talk at the Switzerland HPC Conference. “Dan Olds will present recent research into the history of High Performance Interconnects (HPI), the current state of the HPI market, where HPIs are going in the future, and how customers should evaluate HPI options today. This will be a highly informative and interactive session.”

Rescale Announces ScaleX Labs with Intel Xeon Phi and Omni-Path

Today the Rescale HPC Cloud introduced the ScaleX Labs with Intel Xeon Phi processors and Intel Omni-Path Fabric managed by R Systems. The collaboration brings lightning-fast, next-generation computation to Rescale’s cloud platform for big compute, ScaleX Pro. “We are proud to provide a remote access platform for Intel’s latest processors and interconnect, and appreciate the committed cooperation of our partners at R Systems,” said Rescale CEO Joris Poort. “Our customers care about both performance and convenience, and the ScaleX Labs with Intel Xeon Phi processors brings them both in a single cloud HPC solution at a price point that works for everyone.”

Video: Omni-Path Status, Upstreaming, and Ongoing Work

Todd Rimmer from Intel presented this talk at the OpenFabrics Workshop. “Intel Omni-Path was first released in early 2016. Omni-Path host and management software is all open sourced. This session will provide an overview of Omni-Path including some of the technical capabilities and performance results as well as some recent industry results.”

Megware to Install CooLMUC 3 Supercomputer at LRZ in Germany

“The new CooLMUC 3 system outperforms its predecessors in a number of respects, including its key feature of cooling in thermally insulated racks all compute and login nodes, power supply units, and Omni-Path switches directly with hot water, a combination the likes of which has never been seen before,” said Axel Auweter, Head of HPC Development at MEGWARE. “Even at a cooling water temperature of 40 degrees Celsius and a room temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, a maximum of just 3% waste heat is produced in the ambient air.”
