Podcast: AI for Science

In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team looks at the AI for Science program coming out of Argonne National Laboratory. “This is one of the biggest potential changes in our industry and well worth the investigation. But figuring out where AI fits into the traditional world of research and simulation is a difficult problem. Henry points out that nearly every grant proposal needs to include ‘AI’ in order to get serious consideration.”

The eX3 infrastructure allows Norwegian HPC researchers and their international collaborators to explore bleeding-edge hardware and software that will be instrumental to the coming generation of supercomputers. “Simula chose Bright Cluster Manager to provide comprehensive management of eX3, enabling the organization to administer its HPC platform as a single entity; provisioning the hardware, operating systems and workload managers from a unified interface.”

2nd Gen AMD EPYC Processors Power New IBM Cloud Bare Metal Servers

Today, AMD announced that IBM Cloud is enhancing its global infrastructure with 2nd Gen AMD EPYC processors to power its latest bare metal servers. Available now, these new bare metal servers are the first 2nd Gen AMD EPYC based offering from IBM Cloud and are focused on the computing power and performance required to accelerate modern workloads like data analytics, electronic design automation, artificial intelligence and virtualized and containerized workloads.

Podcast: A Look inside the El Capitan Supercomputer coming to LLNL

In this podcast, the Radio Free HPC team looks at some of the more interesting configuration aspects of the pending El Capitan exascale supercomputer coming to LLNL in 2023. “Dan talks about the briefing he received on the new Lawrence Livermore El Capitan system to be built by HPE/Cray. This new $600 million system will be fueled by the AMD Genoa processor coupled with AMD’s Instinct GPUs. Performance should come in at TWO 64-bit exaflops peak, which is very, very sporty.”

Student Teams Encouraged to Join the 3rd APAC HPC-AI Competition

Student teams are encouraged to apply for the 2020 APAC HPC-AI Competition. Continuing the success of the previous competitions, student teams will square off against international teams to produce solutions and applications in the High-Performance Computing and Artificial Intelligence domains. “We hope that the HPC-AI training established among our young aspiring programmers can help us tackle global threats such as COVID-19 and accelerate an improved response to future pandemics.” 

PSSC Labs Speeds HPC with AMD EPYC Processors

Today PSSC Labs touted impressive performance on their server lineup powered by AMD EPYC processors. Recently named an AMD Elite Partner, PSSC Labs is developing a unique set of platforms leveraging EPYC processors for AI, Big Data, HPC and IOT. In addition, these platforms will be optimized for computationally extensive workloads in the design & engineering, life science and weather modeling industries.

AMD Powers Azure HBv2 Virtual Machines for HPC Workloads

The AMD and Microsoft partnership continues to expand this week with the launch of Microsoft Azure NVv4 Virtual Machines. Powered by 2nd Gen AMD EPYC  Processors and AMD Radeon Instinct GPUs, the powerful new VMs are now generally available to customers in South Central US, East US, and West Europe regions, with additional regions planned for the coming months. “These VMs, the first in the industry to be powered by both AMD EPYC CPUs and Radeon Instinct GPUs, enable customers to scale virtual desktops in the cloud that support a variety of workloads.”

Benchmarking CPUs at Shell

Ronald Cogswell from Shell gave this talk at the Rice Oil & Gas Conference. “In this presentation we will compare the benchmarking results from the latest 2 generations of CPU hardware from AMD and Intel. The benchmarks were conducted using proprietary Seismic kernels as well as known open source benchmarks. The study focused on memory bandwidth, flops and overall performance and provides results of real-world production Seismic workloads.”

Bradley McCredie from AMD gave this talk at the Rice Oil & Gas Conference. “While foundries bravely drive forward to overcome the technical and economic challenges posed by scaling to 5nm and beyond, Moore’s law alone can provide only a fraction of the performance / watt and performance / dollar gains needed to satisfy the demands of today’s high performance computing and artificial intelligence applications. To close the gap, multiple strategies are required. First, new levels of innovation and design efficiency will supplement technology gains to continue to deliver meaningful improvements in SoC performance. Second, heterogenous compute architectures will create x-factor increases of performance efficiency for the most critical applications.”
