Cavium ThunderX2 Processor goes GA for HPC and Beyond

Today Cavium announced the General Availability of ThunderX2, Cavium’s second generation of Armv8-A SoC processors. “Integrating ThunderX2 into the HPE Apollo 70 Servers is another example of HPE’s leadership in driving innovation and superior technical solutions into the HPC server market. The ThunderX2 processor provides excellent compute and memory performance that is critical for our HPE Apollo 70 customers and the applications they depend on.”

Today Aquila announced delivery and installation of the first ever fixed cold plate liquid cooled Aquarius HPC system. Sandia National Laboratories has deployed the system at the NREL in order to fully study the benefits of Aquila’s fixed cold plate warm water cooling technology. “We feel their leadership will help shape the future of HPC and influence the modern data center designer towards adoption of liquid cooling. Our shared vision holds the promise of improving data center energy efficiency by as much as 50%.”

Trinity Supercomputer lands at #7 on TOP500

The Trinity Supercomputer at Los Alamos National Laboratory was recently named as a top 10 supercomputer on two lists: it made number three on the High Performance Conjugate Gradients (HPCG) Benchmark project, and is number seven on the TOP500 list. “Trinity has already made unique contributions to important national security challenges, and we look forward to Trinity having a long tenure as one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world.” said John Sarrao, associate director for Theory, Simulation and Computation at Los Alamos.

As the Third International Workshop on Communication Architectures for HPC, Big Data, Deep Learning and Clouds at Extreme Scale, the one day workshop takes place at the Frankfurt Marriott Hotel on Thursday, June 22. “The objectives of this workshop will be to share the experiences of the members of this community and to learn the opportunities and challenges in the design trends for exascale communication architectures.”

LANL Prepares Next Generation of HPC Professionals at New Mexico High School Supercomputing Challenge

More than 200 New Mexico students and teachers from 55 different teams came together in Albuquerque the week to showcase their computing research projects at the 27th annual New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge expo and awards ceremony. “It is encouraging to see the excitement generated by the participants and the great support provided by all the volunteers involved in the Supercomputing Challenge,” said David Kratzer of the Laboratory’s High Performance Computing Division, the Los Alamos coordinator of the Supercomputing Challenge.

Exascale Computing Project Selects Co-Design Center for Graph Analytics

The Exascale Computing Project (ECP) has selected its fifth Co-Design Center to focus on Graph Analytics — combinatorial (graph) kernels that play a crucial enabling role in many data analytic computing application areas as well as several ECP applications. Initially, the work will be a partnership among PNNL, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and Purdue University.
