HPC industry veteran Jack Collins, long-time fixture in the scientific supercomputing community, has seen it all in HPC, from the days when his input/output device for storing integrals was nine-track tape to today’s 750-GPU monster systems. So he has a full appreciation for how far HPC has come. At the same time, he’s concerned about the power of HPC for dark purposes, such as deepfakes: “’Seeing is believing,’ is what people used to say,” he told the late Rich Brueckner. “I can hack a video and make it look like anything in an afternoon. That’s potentially societal altering. We have to be very careful with that.”

Veteran Technology Journalist Doug Black Named to Succeed Rich Brueckner as Editor of insideHPC

insideHPC Media has announced that veteran technology journalist Doug Black has been named editor-in-chief of insideHPC. Black succeeds the late Rich Brueckner, who purchased the property in 2010 and has been a prominent figure in HPC media ever since. Black has been a technology and business writer since 1985, serving in journalistic, marketing and public relations roles. He has been involved with the HPC community since 1991 and has worked on numerous technology announcements and media campaigns in support of companies, including Intel and SGI, throughout the HPC ecosystem.

Data-centric Programming Helps ETH Zurich Team Win Gordon Bell Prize

Today ACM named a six-member team from ETH Zurich recipients of the 2019 ACM Gordon Bell Prize for their work on DaCe OMEN, a new framework for simulating the transport of electrical signals through nanoscale materials. “The ETH Zurich researchers simulated the 10,000-atom system 14 times faster than an earlier framework that was used for a 1,000- atom system. The DaCe OMEN code they developed for the simulation has been run on two top-6 hybrid supercomputers, reaching a sustained performance of 85.45 Pflop/s on 4,560 nodes of Summit (42.55% of the peak) in double precision, and 90.89 Pflop/s in mixed precision.”
